Read every single word of Christopher Hitchens’ recent Vanity Fair article about his cancer.

And also read (or reread) David Horowitz’s definitive essay “The Two Christophers” on Hitchens’ memoir.

Dear Christopher,

Thank you for being a continual inspiration — even and especially when you’ve fought for a cause which I haven’t shared.

The fiery passion of your argumentation has both warmed us when we’ve stood with and burnt us when we’ve stood apart.  And there is no writer on this planet whose heart has not chilled to a sick green at the cool grace of your elegant prose.

From your many works the piece that will always remain closest to me comes from Letters to a Young Contrarian as it most clearly distills the essence of the Radical Spirit : Fiat justia, ruat caelum,

DO JUSTICE AND LET THE SKIES FALL.

Though I’ll certainly take a few of your more modest words from your talk with Anderson Cooper the other night:

“And I might as well say to anyone who might be watching: If you can hold it down on the smokes and the cocktails you might be advised to do so.”

Warmest regards,
David Swindle
