Catholic teaching is that there need to be certain common sense protections for people in regard to the law. The law has no place in telling people who they may associate with or who they may do business with. A government which can do that can force a bank to issue loans to people who don't qualify. We are talking about a matter of principle, the principle that government must be limited to the criminal and civil justice systems. So don't say we just need to violate the principle the right way, or that with better people such bad things wouldn't happen.
