JournAlist (not to be confused with JournOlist) Byron York exposed the vast left-wing conspiracy several years ago. The conspiracy has since metastasized into Journolist and other new left-wing activist ventures.
Yesterday, here at NewsReal Blog I mentioned that I’m engaged in a friendly debate about Journolist with the American Spectator’s John Tabin. Tabin has argued that Journolist is no different from similar initiatives spearheaded by conservative politicos. He’s right, of course, but this proves my point: The Journolisters weren’t journalists; they were political activists.
Tabin makes two additional points in defense of the Journolisters. First he says there is no evidence that Journolist compromised its straight-news reporters. Their work, he says, was still fair and balanced. And second, Tabin charges The Daily Caller editor Tucker Carlson with practicing unscrupulous “tabloid journalism.”
As for the first charge, it must be said that journalistic bias and distortion is rarely obvious and direct. Instead, it’s often opaque and indirect. It manifests itself in the types of questions that journalists ask, their choice of stories, and who and what they find credible and worthy of journalistic investigation and reporting.
In this sense, there is no doubt but that most reporters were biased against Sarah Palin. And some reporters, especially those on Journolist, acted in concert — conspired, if you will — against her. This is obvious from the media’s extreme hostility toward Palin during the 2008 campaign.
In fact, so unprecedented and unhinged were the media attacks again Palin that it often seemed as if our Third Estate were part and parcel of the Democratic Party and the Obama presidential campaign. Matthew Continetti documents this quite well in his book, The Persecution of Sarah Palin: How the Elite Media Tried to Bring Down a Rising Star.
Well, thanks to The Daily Caller’s stunning expose of Journolist, we now know that the media’s hostility toward Palin (which Continetti documents) wasn’t an accident — it was by intentional design.
In short, Journolist helped sustain and perpetuate media bias against Palin and other conservative Republicans. It did this by socializing, in secret, liberal journalistic group-think and fostering a common journalistic orthodoxy (or narrative) that would serve Barack Obama and the liberal agenda. And yet, Tabin charges Carlson with practicing tabloid journalism! That’s rich.
