Time Magazine columnist Joe Klein, my polar opposite leftist namesake, posted another puerile attack on the Swampland blog against opponents of Cordoba House. This time his target was Newt Gingrich, whose opposition to the planned $100 million 13 story mosque complex within earshot of Ground Zero I discussed yesterday.

Klein claims:

If Newt actually believe what he claims to–that the American way is superior–he’d be in favor of placing the mosque near Ground Zero, as a demonstration of American freedom and tolerance.
I’m afraid we’ll be seeing this sort of un-American intolerance from more than a few of the Republicans candidates as the presidential campaign fires up; I’ll be on the lookout for those who have the courage to stand up for true American principles on issues like this one.
As usual, Joe Klein misses the central point.  The reason for opposing Cordoba House is that, from all evidence which has appeared so far, the new mosque-community center complex may well be ground zero for just the “sort of un-American intolerance” that Joe abhors but that is inherent in sharia law - the Islamic laws under which Islam is superior to all other religions, women are inferior to men and infidels are inferior to Muslims.

What Muslims want is to ensure that their secular laws are not in conflict with the Quran or the Hadith, the sayings of Muhammad.
