Time Magazine columnist Joe Klein, my polar opposite leftist namesake, posted another puerile attack on the Swampland blog against opponents of Cordoba House. This time his target was Newt Gingrich, whose opposition to the planned $100 million 13 story mosque complex within earshot of Ground Zero I discussed yesterday.
If Newt actually believe what he claims to–that the American way is superior–he’d be in favor of placing the mosque near Ground Zero, as a demonstration of American freedom and tolerance.
I’m afraid we’ll be seeing this sort of un-American intolerance from more than a few of the Republicans candidates as the presidential campaign fires up; I’ll be on the lookout for those who have the courage to stand up for true American principles on issues like this one.
Islamic law is about God’s law, and it is not that far from what we read in the Declaration of Independence about “the Laws of Nature and Nature’s God.” The Declaration says “men are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable Rights; that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness”…The principles behind American secular law are similar to Shariah law – that we protect life, liberty and property, that we provide for the common welfare, that we maintain a certain amount of modesty. What Muslims want is to ensure that their secular laws are not in conflict with the Quran or the Hadith, the sayings of Muhammad.
