What is “Transformative Education”?

Transformative, or Transformational, Education is an educational theory adopted by Jack Mezirow, Emeritus Professor of Adult and Continuing Education at Teachers College, Columbia University. Its sister theory, also espoused by Progressives, is Transformative Justice and it generally includes Critical Pedagogy. Coincidentally, Transformative Education is advocated by William Ayers, who is also, coincidentally, an education theorist at Columbia UniversityJulio Olalla, government attorney for Salvador Allende, the first democratically elected Marxist president in the Americas, gives seminars on Transformative Learning. Kathleen Brown, Director of UNC’s School of Education, is another of the many advocates of Transformative Learning.

“Transformative learning changes the way people see themselves and their world.”

“By exposing candidates to information and ideas they may resist and by assisting them to stretch beyond their comfort zones, a critique and transformation of hegemonic structures and ideologies can occur.”

In other words, Transformative Education is basically a fancy term for Marxist indoctrination, and it is used as a core strategy of the “social justice” movement to indoctrinate the poor to become political activists. Further, it is the primary role of CCHD‘s community organizing mission.

Transformative education or transformative learning is an emerging methodology that involves personal experiences and reflection on those experiences in ways that expand self-awareness and world view. Transformative education influences a person’s beliefs, their assumptions about others and as a consequence, affects one’s behavior. When implemented by the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD), transformative education includes prayerful reflection and action for justice that is rooted in faith.

CCHD utilizes transformative education processes to extend awareness of poverty beyond statistics and political discourse. Rather, CCHD seeks to convey the human reality of poverty in the United States, and as stated in its education mandate, “to impress these facts on the non-poor and to effect in them a conversion of heart, a growth in compassion and sensitivity to the needs of their brothers and sisters in want.”

The Transformative Studies Institute lists a clear set of goals that are not exactly compatible with Catholicism.
