Democratic strategist James Carville has completely had it with the man who was his hero only a few years ago, Barack Obama. The reason? The White House’s reaction to the BP oil spill. Carville – rightfully – blames the administration for first not reacting fast enough to the biggest environmental disaster in American history and then, when they finally did do something, going way overboard by announcing a moratorium on deepwater oil drilling in the Gulf.
“People here have been so let down,” Carville told CNN’s Anderson Cooper. “The levies… the federal government let us down… Now the government comes in… and say ‘just blanket stop everything out there’. It’s killing the economy here!”
“They don’t have the foggiest idea about life here, they don’t have the foggiest idea about what’s going on.” Clearly upset with the federal government’s lack of action, Carville went nuclear. “The federal government is about to kill us.”
Although Carville is rather vocal about it, he’s far from the only oil-state Democrat who passionately opposes the (six month) moratorium. Senator Mary Landrieu (Louisiana) and Representative Gene Green (Houston) agree. Unlike the radical environmentalists in control of their party, these Democrats understand that the moratorium is killing their states. As the AP points out in an article published two days ago, “the moratorium’s impact on the four Gulf states – Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama – is estimated at $2.1 billion by Louisiana State University.”
No wonder then that the New Orleans-based Carville is outraged: all he can do is watch as his state’s economy is being destroyed by Washington’s precious moratorium.
