For awhile now I’ve been talking up author Howard Bloom. I’ve referenced his work in numerous posts, featured his books in NRB book club and then earlier this month I reviewed his newest book for FrontPage in an article titled “How Science Crushes the Left.”

Tuesday night I had the exciting experience of getting to interview Howard for two hours. Over the course of our talk he laid out the central themes behind his three books and makes clear his general approach to interpreting the world. I then got to get his take on the issues that we care about most at NRB — foreign policy, Israel, Islam, and capitalism.

What struck me in particular about Howard from talking to him was something I already knew: he has a similar style and approach to the world as David Horowitz. Both are passionate Zionists with a deep appreciation for the power of capitalism to improve the quality of human life. Both speak with passion and have intellects that dance from subject to subject. In fact both were even pushed out of the Left by the same historical reality: the practical effect of the ’60s antiwar movement was the communist takeover of Vietnam and Cambodia and the subsequent genocide. They just come from different life experiences. David emerged from the worlds of Marxism, the ’60s New Left, and America’s racial problem. Howard comes from the worlds of science and entertainment. These two sets of life experience cause them to come at the problems from very different angles but ultimately arrive at strikingly similar conclusions.

Today I present the first segment of this interview. I’ve created a video with the audio. To jazz up the experience I’ve featured images throughout illustrating the subjects Howard and I discuss. I hope you enjoy it, there’s at least a dozen more to come, all of which should be more technically exciting as NRB begins its leap into more audio and video media.
