George Moneybags Soros

Catholics United, an organization of dissenting Catholics which has received a hefty amount of funding from multi-billionaire leftist George Soros, has announced that it will dedicate $500,000 to a campaign designed to promote the re-election of Democrats who helped to push through the massive healthcare reform bill.

Catholics United’s unprecedented effort, which they are raising $500,000 to support, will educate constituents of John Boccieri (OH-16), Kathy Dahlkemper (PA-03), Steve Driehaus (OH-01), and Tom Perriello (VA-05) about health care reform and a number of other issues. Activities will expand to other Congressional districts throughout the summer and fall.

The organization claims that it is a myth that the new law funds abortion and their effort is designed to “set the record straight”, but National Right to Life has proven that President Obama’s executive order on the matter does not prevent funding for abortions.

“The available evidence indicates that the Obama Administration bureaucrats had no intention whatever to impede the funding of abortions through the new federal program to establish high-risk insurance pools — until NRLC sounded the alarm and put the spotlight on what they were up to,” [NRLC Legislative Director Douglas Johnson] said.

“Regrettably, there are many other programs and authorities in the 2,000-page health care law that will provide the Obama Administration with additional opportunities to expand abortion — and we can expect that they will try to do so, particularly when they think they can accomplish something under the public’s radar,” Johnson continued.

Catholics United, far from bringing clarity to the abortion debate, is famous for “muddying” the issue for Catholic voters during election campaigns by convincing them that other issues are more important. This is a tactic Catholics United director Chris Korzen boasted about during the 2008 presidential campaign.

How can Catholics United call themselves “Catholic” and get away with it? Bishops have the right, of course, to ask any organization to refrain from using the word “Catholic” in its name. Only an obedient organization would do so, however. For that reason, the Catholic faithful must continue to be on guard against dissenting organizations like Catholics United who wish to pull the wool over their eyes about where the Church stands on issues. For Catholics who choose to vote in a manner consistent with Catholic teaching, the bishops’ Faithful Citizenship website is designed to help in that regard.
