While this week’s steady flow of juicy revelations about left-wing “journalists” letting the impartiality mask slip behind the closed doors of Journolist needs to be heard by every American, there are only so many ways of saying “the mainstream media got caught conspiring to lie, cheat and smear.” Perhaps the more interesting question to ponder is what rank-and-file liberals will make of the bombshells.

A distinct elitist streak runs through modern liberalism. In the left-wing mind, to believe in abortion on demand, wealth redistribution, strict environmental regulations, blank checks for public educators, racial quotas, and so on are not merely policy preferences, but the hallmarks of being modern and enlightened—what all the respectable people believe. Accordingly, they identify with information outlets that reflect the mindset of the right people—not drivel like Fox News or talk radio, which is for the ignorant rabble.

Chicago Reader columnist Glenn Garvin recounts his sister’s obsessive, ill-placed devotion to National Public Radio with a quote that perfectly encapsulates this mindset:

“You can get your news from giant corporations if you want to,” she snaps. “I’d rather get mine from people who aren’t motivated by profit. I’d rather get my news from people who think like me.”

Somehow, not being “motivated by profit” didn’t endow NPR producer Sarah Spitz with enough basic human compassion to keep her from telling her pals how she’d “laugh loudly like a maniac” if a radio personality with beliefs diametrically opposed to hers suffered a heart attack right in front of her. Maybe profit isn’t the only source of evil in the world after all…

The real question is how the MSM’s remaining audience will react to their unmasking. Will they ask themselves how “compassionate” people can be so savage, or what else they’ve been lied to about? Or will they continue to stand behind the people who tell them what they want to hear? Sadly, the answer is probably as predictable as the Journolist conversations themselves.
