Can Republicans and so-called Blue Dog Democrats benefit from following the Australian elections? I know Obama is paying attention. Why? Because it looks like a debate over immigration. What’s more, former-Prime Minister Kevin Rudd was recently rolled by the now-Prime Minister Julia Gillard, in part, because he wouldn’t get tough on border security.

When the leftwing Labor Party won power with the help of Australia’s pro-Labor media they didn’t count on this, however. They didn’t see (or didn’t want to see) how their soft-on-people-smuggling border policies would undermine their popularity. What’s more, Australia’s pro-Labor media didn’t see (or didn’t care to) that the issue was exploding in the outer suburbs and townships, across Australia. Just like the UK. And now the Labor Party is saying, “We’re tough!”

From the right-of-center opposition Liberal Party’s website:

The arrival of the third illegal boat in as many days means that more than 7,000 people have now arrived illegally by boat under Labor’s failed policies, Shadow Minister for Immigration and Citizenship, Scott Morrison and Shadow Minister for Justice, Customs and Border Protection, Michael Keenan said today.

“This is just the latest in a long series of damning statistics that show the extent to which Labor’s immigration and border protection policies have failed,” Mr Morrison said.

“Under Labor 79 boats have arrived so far this year alone, there are over 4,000 people in immigration detention including 561 children and three boats are arriving every week,” he said.

“This is typical of a government that is more interested in polls and spin than effective policy. Labor needs to understand that it is their policies that have failed, not their message nor their messenger.

It will be interesting to see how the debate plays out. In marginal seats across Australia, working-class families are seriously concerned about paperless refugees arriving on their shores, from Muslim-majority nations. They’re tired of being patronized by media elites, and the false argument that 7,000 is only a small number when, in truth, people smuggling boats of death are trending up, not down.

In April, President Obama informed the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s 7:30 Report (14/04/10) that:

I really do think there is, you know Kevin is somebody who I probably share as much of a world view as any world leader out there, I find him smart but humble, he works wonderfully well in multilateral settings, he’s always constructive, incisive.

Today, former-Prime Minister Kevin Rudd’s soft-on-illegal-immigration positions look like poison.
