On Monday, Calvin Freiburger shared with NRB readers the story of Ken Howell, a University of Illinois professor of Catholicism who was fired for informing students of the Catholic Church’s teaching on homosexuality. Public reaction to the university’s decision has been fierce and Howell, now represented by the Alliance Defense Fund seeks reinstatement.

The case of Ken Howell is alarming not only to those who value academic freedom as discussed in Freiburger’s piece, but also to faithful Catholics who consider these things on a personal level and are left wondering what sort of place America has become for us. If American law were to hold that a Catholic professor may be legitimately fired merely for explaining a tenet of his faith, America will have become a country which nods its approval of Fascism in academia.

It is worthwhile to consider that had the professor been fired for a particular aspect of his flesh (e.g, skin color) the Left would have rightly arisen to his defense, but since he was fired for an idea, an idea with which they are in disagreement, those voices stand largely silent.  A lesson here is learned, that the Left is concerned not with freedom for all but rather freedom for some, and whether or not you deserve freedom depends a good deal on what you think.  We are seeing a similar occurrence of this in North Carolina as “freedom of conscience” is defended provided that Jesus does not live in your conscience, in which case you must be silenced.

America is a very diverse nation.  It is our ability to live in peace with one other despite our differences of opinion which makes us a threat to Fascism.   The University of Illinois, in applying severe economic and social pressure on Ken Howell by dismissing him from his job, has engaged in a clearly recognizable tenet of Fascism:

[Fascism] takes responsibility for all aspects of life, including our health and well-being, and seeks to impose uniformity of thought and action, whether by force or through regulation and social pressure. [Jonah Goldberg]

One doesn’t have to be president of a country to dabble in Fascism.  There are pockets of Fascism in churches, legislatures, hospitals and universities. Ken Howell serves as an example that people of faith must be prepared to endure severe treatment and be willing to stand against it even in the most unlikely places and for the most absurd reasons. In his effort to be reinstated, Howell deserves the support of all who love freedom.

You can take the first step toward defeating Fascism by understanding how pervasive it is in America.  Discover the Networks is an excellent resource which maps the structure of the American Left.  FrontPageMag and NewsRealBlog will keep you up to date on the latest news and commentary.
