For years, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People’s mission has been advancing the Left, not minorities, and it’s never been more obvious than it is today, thanks to their partisan, demagogic attack on the Tea Party movement. Last night, the New York Civil Rights Coalition’s Michael Meyers told Sean Hannity:

MEYERS: [A]nd the irony of it all is that the NAACP is accusing the tea party of wanting to push America to the past, pre-Civil Rights era. That’s exactly where the NAACP is stuck, in the past! It does not see, it does not recognize the significant racial progress in this nation […] the NAACP-sponsored press conference — the NAACP had a speaker there who was condemning a black member of the tea party as an Uncle Tom…

HANNITY: At this conference?

MEYERS: … as a Negro — no, at the press conference in May — as an Uncle Tom, as a Negro because this black man, who is a free market person, doesn’t agree with them! Now, this is the NAACP engaging in racial calumny.

(Here’s the responsible, racially-sensitive May incident to which Meyers refers.)

The Daily Beast’s Tunku Varadarajan has an effective defense of the Tea Party, renaming the NAACP the “National Association for the Advancement of Cynical Politics”:

If black Americans are suffering due to our current economic woes, Obama’s own policies are hardly helping them. The NAACP can’t bitch about “the Man” anymore because the Man is Obama. And so instead it turns its racially monolithic vituperation on the Tea Party, which has never been in power, and has had no impact on the economic condition of black Americans—except to advocate policies (smaller government, lower taxes, radically reduced deficits, etc.) that would likely improve the standard of living of all Americans (blacks included). In fact, the Tea Party is a greater friend of black Americans, one might say, than the administration, and is much more representative of America than the NAACP. (There are many more black members of the Tea Party—however you define that movement—than there are, by definition, non-black members of the NAACP.)

So here we have the Tea Party, one of the nation’s most organic, Athenian, democratic movements, being attacked by a political organization—the NAACP—that is among the most sclerotic, dinosaurian, and cadaverous of America’s political groupings.

I’ve blogged before about black Tea Partiers that the Left would love to pretend don’t exist, and last weekend, I saw firsthand just how “racist” the movement is—attendees of the Waterfront Park Tea Party in Winneconne, Wisconsin didn’t show any signs of racial animus, but they did give an overwhelmingly favorable response to black speaker Pastor David King, who succinctly stated the Tea Party’s true spirit: we’re all just Americans.

Two things are going on with the NAACP. First, they can’t accept that their original mission—the end of institutionalized racism—has ended in victory, making their very existence all but obsolete (save for a few policy issues and the occasional actions of individual racists). Second, they have been corrupted by a pathology that makes the interests of black Americans inseparable from those of the Left, the inevitable conclusion of which is the “Uncle Tom” incident noted above. Those who really want to advance the well-being of minorities should instead work toward the separation of race and ideology.
