Nowrasteh continues Thursday:
“In Iran, women have very few legal rights if any. I mean the fact is if a woman is accused of a crime, she has to prove that she is innocent where if a man is accused of a crime you have to prove that that man is guilty. So the whole legal system is set up against women over there.”
Having films trashing Bush and Republicans is fine (everyone is entitled to their view), but if a project is taken for the purpose of making a difference, do what Nowrasteh did and make a film that might actually help save someone’s life. Stories regarding women’s rights in the Middle East transcend politics and should be something we can all support.
It is a shame that Soraya couldn’t have had a larger release, but the popularity of the film given its limited release speaks volumes for not only the courage of the director but also the quality of the film. While I have no problem with Hollywood continuing its usual shenanigans from time to time (escapism has its place), it couldn’t hurt to supplement that with some more useful and influential projects as well. Who knows, it might actually make a difference in someone’s life.
