Former Speaker Newt Gingrich is best known for being the architect of the “Contract with America,” which was instrumental in the Republicans winning the elections for Congress in 1994. His career includes being a college professor, historian, author and political consultant. He has published twenty-one books, many of them making the New York Times bestseller list. Gingrich’s latest book, To Save America, offers ideas on solving problems facing America today. He discussed some of these issues with NewsRealBlog.

NewsRealBlog: What do you think the Republican message should be?

Newt Gingrich: Are you comfortable with an economy where one out of every ten Americans is out of work? President Obama is using this as an excuse to create a bigger Washington that is more political and bureaucratically centered. This is at the cost to American jobs.

NRB: In your book you state that “small business is the engine of job growth, creating three out of every four new jobs. And many of the remaining jobs are created by companies that began as small start-ups.” Should Republican candidates be emphasizing this?

Gingrich: There should be a head to head debate with the President. He supports a big bureaucracy, big spending, and a big Washington government. Is that the right way to create real jobs? As an alternative there is small business, entrepreneurships, innovators that can create the jobs. I think the country by about 4 to 1 would pick small business over the politicians.

NRB: You quote your daughter, Jackie Cushman, who wrote “We were told to vote for change we could believe in and found we had elected people who wanted to change what we believe.” Is this the essence of the new ‘Contract with America’?

Gingrich: She captured a lot of what is going on today. I think we need a clear and repetitive message.

NRB: In To Save America you cite David Horowitz’s statement about Saul Alinsky in which he explains the “Rules for Radicals.” Do you want to elaborate?

Gingrich: Alinsky had a deep contempt for the American system. Classic Alinsky is deceit, dishonesty, and deception. Any level of dishonesty is appropriate if it undermines the bourgeois middle class.

NRB: How do the Republicans win the argument?

Gingrich: We win the argument through the facts and we must trust Americans to understand the facts. It’s what Reagan did in 1980. He won the argument with Carter over the nature of reality and what policies would work. The American people will be very open to listening and asking for real solutions.
