With all the accolades heaped on Robert Byrd this weekend by Presidents Obama and Clinton, I would like to sit in the Helen Thomas Chair for the next Obama presser (Lord knows when that will be) and ask one off the wall question.

Mr. President, would we be better off today if Robert Byrd had run for President and been elected in 1968 instead of Richard Nixon?

Trent Lott would like an answer…

Considering that Robert Byrd was an avid segregationist who spent the better part of a day filibustering the Civil Rights Act, and Nixon was the author of Affirmative Action (the word “Hispanic” was coined specifically for Nixon-era federal affirmative action forms), I wonder what the answer might be.

It is a matter of faith with the Left that Nixon was The Devil.  However, if Obama would have preferred Byrd, would that absolve Trent Lott?

Just an idle thought on a hot day.
