The Canadian Pediatric Society (CPS) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) are evaluating the potential health benefits of male circumcision, stating that a new guideline for parents is long overdue. But the Toronto Star reports that adversaries to the procedure are raising a ruckus. Georganne Chapin, executive director of the group Intact America, has been at the foreground, fighting the practice of circumcision:
You cannot be cutting off healthy body parts from healthy babies and justifying it for some punitive medical benefits down the line.
Other critics have mistakenly likened circumcision to genital mutilation. How anyone could be so misguided given the reality of female genital mutilation (FGM) is ignorant and irresponsible. Circumcision is by no means a mutilation; FGM is.
Circumcision is practiced by many among the Jewish population and deemed to be a covenant. Although some consider it to be a cruel practice on infants, it is a mild surgical procedure with rare complications. Dr. Marc Siegel defended circumcision as religious right during a Fox News Debate with Georganne Chapin. Rough estimates indicate 32 percent of all infant males in Canada and 60 percent in the United States are currently being circumcised.
On the other hand, FGM is monstrous. It is a widespread procedure in the Islamic world where over 130-million women undergo this torture. During FGM, a razor, knife or sharp glass is used on fully awake girls/women before they hit puberty. This is the meaning of “mutilation,” of which the sole purpose is to inhibit or terminate any sexual feelings of women. Victims often live in pain for the rest of their lives. Not only has the World Health Organization put forth numerous efforts to end this heinous practice, so have brave individuals. On the contrary however, the WHO has supported the practice of male circumcision as an effective tool in preventing HIV and other STDs.
The practice of FGM has made its abysmal appearance on Western soil, even though illegal. It is the manifestation of the gender apartheid we see perpetrated under the tenets of Islamic Jurisprudence which is inconsistent with Western human rights where women are not mere property to be subjugated and controlled by men. There is a blatant difference between FGM and the practice of male circumcision, so let’s not confuse the two by flippantly interchanging labels and creating a political brouhaha about circumcision which would be better served against the women-hating practice of FGM.
