Ever wonder how many of our politicians seem a little too comfortable around the morally monstrous? No doubt some lack interest in moral matters. But most probably have their heads are stuffed with ancient misconceptions about morality. Ocassionally one of them will open their yap, and accidentally give us a quick glimpse behind the curtain.

Our latest entrant in the Ends-Justify-Means category is Bill Clinton’s glowing defense of Robert Byrd ex-KKK official. According to all too many of our political creatures, the pursuit of political power (especially by leftists or their friends) is such a celestial end that it justifies virtually any means however immoral.

According to RealClearPolitics (video here) Clinton tells us:

“He once had a fleeting association with the Ku Klux Klan, what does that mean? I’ll tell you what it means. He was a country boy from the hills and hollows from West Virginia. He was trying to get elected.”

We have to consider briefly the flat lie with which Mr. Clinton opens his remarks. A “fleeting association”. What “fleeting association”? Senator Byrd was a klansman. He rose within the klan to the comically titled rank of Exalted Cyclops. And he retained a close and friendly relation with the Klan for years after his active membership. Presumably he recovered his missing eye sometime during his post-klan period.

But how are we to understand Clinton’s remark as a whole? Is Mr. Clinton telling us that the senator and ex-klansman was too stupid and/or ignorant to figure out that the KKK were not altogether on the side of the angels? Are we to understand that he didn’t realize that the lynchings of innocent men were morally questionable. Or are we to think that that he didn’t even know that they had happened, so ignorant was the budding senator?
