The Presbyterian Church is leaking:  Its congregants are trickling away.  About one million members have defected in the last 25 years.

This loss of members may (or may not) be discussed at the 219th General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (USA) [PC(USA)]  starting Friday in Minneapolis and running through next week.  It may be tucked in somewhere among such topics as “racial ethnic concerns,” “gender justice,” HIV testing, and such festivities as the “celebration of faith, hope, and love for all persons of all sexual orientations and gender identities ….” But looking at the schedule, we can be assured that one subject will be front and center:

“How do we solve the problem of Israel?”

One combs the docket in vain for a discussion of Sudan, Iran, Hamas, Cuba, Venezuela, Libya, or any of the world’s most odious human-rights violators.  But there are numerous panels devoted to what is apparently the most pressing issue in the world for Presbyterians: Jewish “occupation and settlement” in Israel.

As detailed by Dexter Van Zile, Christian Media Analyst of the Committee for Accuracy in Middle East Reporting in America (CAMERA), in an essay at JCPA.org:

In March 2010, anti-Israel partisans on a Middle East Study Committee (MESC)…released a 172-page report [“Breaking Down Walls”] that demonizes Israel and downplays Arab and Muslim hostility toward Jews and their Middle Eastern homeland.  This report, which will be on the agenda of the PC(USA)’s General Assembly…is nothing short of a full-scale assault on Israel’s legitimacy as a Jewish state.
