 As an agnostic, I have no idea if the universe began with a bang or has existed forever, or is the work of a Creator. But regarding what I do know, I am convinced that the biblical chapter called “Genesis” conveys a central truth about human fate.

The First Parents wanted to be like God and could not be satisfied with anything else. Though they were immortal and lived without labor and suffered no pain, earthly abundance was insufficient for them. Even in Eden they felt denied; paradise was not enough. What they lacked became their want. “What is good without evil [they asked in effect] or love without hate?” Perverse though it might seem, this logic made sense. For what can be desired that cannot be withheld? We are defined by negatives; they describe the emptiness we fill.
