The Hypocritical Left Trashes “Universal Human Rights”

Mike Lumish is a teacher, a recent PhD in American History, a resident of San Francisco, a liberal, and until recently a Democrat, who is thoroughly disgusted with the anti-Zionism and Israel Hatred promoted by the Left... He also tends to smoke too much.

The “progressive” Left allegedly believes in a little something that we can call “universal human rights.”  Rumor has it that they believe in democracy, free speech, freedom of religion, women’s rights, gay rights, and so forth.

They don’t.

If the Left actually believed in universal human rights than it would stand up for those values whenever, and wherever, they are violated. This, however, is clearly not the case. The Left’s interest in such things is entirely dependent upon the skin color of the alleged perpetrators and whether or not they happen to be Jews.  The Left could care less about Arab on Arab violence or Muslim on Muslim violence or African on African violence.  For example, ethnic violence in southern Kyrgyzstan has recently left thousands dead and tens of thousands displaced. Yet we read barely a peep of protest from the Left press or political blogs. This should hardly be surprising given the fact that the Left has also shown virtually no interest in the genocide in Darfur, nor the five million dead in the Congo.

{Five Million!}

If Kyrgyzstan represented an example of either Europeans, Americans, or Israelis oppressing “people of color” than the Left would be screaming from the rooftops. However, since this is not an example of white people oppressing non-white people they are mute. If, for whatever reason, Israel refuses to allow, say, cardamom or Bazooka bubble gum into the Gaza strip, the howls of protest would ring throughout the countryside. If, however, Kyrgyzstanis slaughter thousands of ethnic Uzbeks, as we’ve seen in recent weeks … well? … who cares, really?

It is not that the Left holds Israel and the west to a double standard, but that, in Israel’s case, at least, it holds that country to what The Brothers of Judea call the Ethereal Standard. The Ethereal Standard is always out of reach. The Left demands that Israel meet an impossible “pie in the sky” standard and then perpetually denounces that country when it fails to do so.

Meanwhile, as Richard Cohen notes in the Washington Post:

The irony is that Israel is often called a colonialist power. In some sense, the charge is true. But the ones with the true colonialist mentality are those who think that Arabs cannot be held to Western standards of decency. So, for this reason, Hamas is apparently forgiven for its treatment of women, its anti-Semitism, its hostility toward all other religions, its fervid embrace of a dark (non-Muslim) medievalism and its absolute insistence that Israel has no right to exist. Maybe the blockade ought to end — but so, too, should anyone’s dreamy idea of Hamas.

Hamas is not only not held to Western standards of decency by the liberal Left, but to no standards of decency whatsoever. Is this because, as Cohen implies, the Left holds to the old, racist, colonialist view that non-white people are naturally inferior to Europeans and should, therefore, not be held to the same standards of decency?

I wonder.
