25. Tony Perkins
Another thing that the Townhall list didn’t take into account: “progressives” especially hate social conservatives. As president of the Family Research Council Perkins is high on the Left’s hate list for opposing the cultural issues nearest and dearest to them.
Why do leftists hate social conservatives so much? Simple: because they have a ludicrous caricature in their heads of a planned Christian theocracy in which they’d no longer be able to get their pornography, abortion-as-birth-control, and PG-13 rated movies and TV shows. You think I’m kidding about this but I’m not.
24. Charles Krauthammer
Krauthammer remains perhaps the most essential conservative columnist in the country. He has the ability to completely reframe and recharge debates in ways that drive the Left insane. His pointing out that the BP Oil Spill was actually the Left’s fault is only the most recent example. I don’t know why Fox News doesn’t just give him his own show already.
23. Rupert Murdoch
Should Murdoch be in a more prominent spot on the list? I don’t think so. Yes, Murdoch is a media baron responsible for all kinds of conservative outlets that the Left loathes. And yes, he’s certainly the stereotype of the evil billionaire. But that’s it: the Left knows that Murdoch cares more about just making money than furthering conservative policy objectives.
22. The Tea Party Patriot
The reason that the Left hates the Tea Parties so much isn’t for what the movement stands for. Sure, that the Tea Parties fighting Obama’s policies and preaching small government isn’t something that makes them any friends among Nation subscribers. No, what the Left cannot tolerate is their methods being stolen and used against them. It’s the Tea Parties’ audacity in going out into the streets and engaging in actual activism — that’s why the Left has to pin the “tea bagger” slur on them. 21. Phyllis Schlafly
The Left’s loathing of Schlafly goes back decades. She’s the original nemesis of the pseudo-feminists (or femisogynists as The Great Lori Ziganto has dubbed them) and one of the key inspirations for today’s conservative women.
Remember too as we’ll see with #20 on the list: the Left particularly hates those from the interest groups they claim to represent who do not submit – conservative women, gays, and minorities are particularly despised. Schlafly was one of the first to challenge this insidious piece of orthodoxy.
