Flaubert's parrot (

Thanks to that essential proto-blog, Arts & Letters Daily, I was directed to a fine essay by Anthony Daniels, praising that masterpiece of Western literature, Flaubert’s Un coeur simple.

Daniels acknowledges the irony: the very simplicity of Flaubert’s tale makes it hard to gush about; it’s like drawing attention to a piece of Shaker furniture by surrounding it by neon signs flashing: LOOK AT THIS FABULOUS CHAIR!!

And in fact, despite his avowed intentions and best efforts, Daniels accidentally trods upon the dainty flowers he’s so eager to share with us. The story really is that fragile. (Frankly, I most enjoyed the glimpse the essay provided into Mr. Daniels’ marriage, which sounds like an enviably blessed one.)

However, one of his paragraphs in particular jumped out at me. It was a slightly jarring segment in the middle of this Zen-like reflection. And with apologies to Jamie Glazov, who wrote an entire (and invaluable) book about this topic, I think Daniels has served up a wonderfully succinct summary of the troubles of our age.

Writes Daniels:

I once heard a Catholic theologian of the school of Liberation Theology denounce the more traditional forms of religious belief as “merely consolatory”; the proper task of religion, in his opinion, was to build heaven on earth, here and now. (I thought at the time of the Tower of Babel; now I would think of the Muslim fundamentalists.) Presumably he thought a time would come when life would be so perfect that Man would need no consolation: the existential equivalent of the time when society was so perfect that no one would have to be good. Suffice it to say that I do not see that time coming soon.

Right on the money parrot.
