*I don’t recall Beck demanding an end to entitlement spending. I remember him repeatedly pleading with politicians to get a handle on reckless spending and try to find solutions to the problems (unfunded liabilities etc.) of Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and so on.
*As for Continetti’s browbeating (“The Federal Reserve is not going away. A flat tax is a long-term goal not a short-term fix. The budget will not be balanced by cutting pork-barrel spending alone. America is not about to renege on her international commitments.”) if government doesn’t get spending under control soon, radical, uncontrollable change will come to America whether he likes it or not. Institutions will crumble. America will change in ways we can’t even foresee now — and America may very well be forced to renege on international commitments and drastically curtail spending at home.
One of Continetti’s big problems is, like other polite company conservatives and Republicans In Name Only, he doesn’t seem to think America is in big trouble. We’re in just another recession; it will pass. Obama is just another liberal; it’s not a big deal. After November things will go on as they always have: Republicans will compete with Democrats for votes and the proverbial pendulum will swing back.
Like so many other arrogant conservative intellectuals Continetti doesn’t get it: The end of America as we know it could very well be at hand unless the country rights itself dramatically.
Remember, the end of America as we know it is exactly what Obama promised during the election campaign. Michelle Obama summed up the First Couple’s attitude best when she said America was a “mean” country.
That’s what these people believe and they’re doing everything in their power to change America.
Glenn Beck, imperfect vessel though he may be, is trying to warn us.
(This is, I hope, my third and final NewsReal blog post on the Continetti article, which, believe you me, grows more tiresome every time I re-read it. The first post was on Friday and the second was on Monday.)
