Michael van der Galien was born in the Dutch city of Leeuwarden in 1984. For as long as he can remember, he has been obsessed with the United States. When he was 17 years old, he started blogging - of course about America. His articles have been published at Big Hollywood, Pajamas Media, Hot Air (the GreenRoom) and Right Across The Atlantic. He's also an editor for the Dutch conservative blog, De Dagelijkse Standaard.

I didn’t mention this yesterday but it’s worth pointing out nonetheless: with her remarks on Fox News recently – that she does not have a big problem with people smoking a joint in the privacy of their own homes – former Governor Sarah Palin proved herself to be more of a Western frontier, than a Southern conservative.

The former is characterized by a minimal government culture with strong libertarian tendencies, while the latter is more focused on maintaining and enforcing moral values.

It will be interesting to watch which side wins this debate in the years ahead: Palin and other Western frontier conservatives, or their moralizing Southern brethren?

In any case, it should be clear by now where I stand: morality shouldn’t be legislated. As long as you don’t infringe upon anybody else’s rights, you should be free to do as you please. If that means you want to smoke pot every now and then, so be it. That’s your business, not the government’s.
