David and Walter–thank you for making those excellent points. David I have to give your statements more thought, as I'm not sure I completely agree, though your point is well taken. Walter, I do agree completely with your point about the difference between morality and justice and in fact have found myself arguing that very point when discussing the difference between taxation and redistribution vs charity.

  Not to be argumentative, but it just seems to me that it goes deeper than that. At some point we made a judgment that it is wrong to kill, wrong to steal, and wrong to harm another (to infringe upon their freedoms). The judgment that an action is right or wrong, good or bad, is a moral judgment.

• Michael, one statement you wrote really jumps out at me:
  "Moral values and wisdom shouldn’t be legislated."
  We hear that all the time–that you can't legislate morality.
  But I'm having trouble thinking of a law that doesn't have a basis in morality or wisdom, and that doesn't make a moral judgment on some level. Perhaps I've missed something in my analysis.
  If you can't legislate on moral values, then on what do we base our legislation?
  Laws against murder, rape, and theft–are they not legislating morality?
