Matterhorn: A Novel of the Vietnam War

Already being recognized as perhaps the classic novel of the Vietnam War.  I would argue that it is also a Great American Novel, somewhere between Philip Caputo and Thomas Wolfe for literary merit, though it’s unpretentiousness and clean reading style may keep some of the literati from recognizing its true greatness.

Hero Found: The Greatest Escape of the Vietnam War

Finally, a biography of Deiter Dengler, the German-born Navy flier who was the only American to escape from a Laotian prison camp during the Vietnam War.  Dengler fascinated director Werner Herzog, who made a documentary Little Dieter Needs to Fly and a feature film, Rescue Dawn about him.

Fighter Pilot

Larger than life heroes don’t come any more colorful than Robin Olds, a near triple ace in WWII, who went on to be the Air Force’s only ace in Vietnam.  Olds’s recently released memoir ranks with the great fighter pilot memoirs like Thunderbolt and Samurai that came out in the post-war era.
