Remember when President Obama railed against “sweet-heart deals” for Halliburton? Yeah, about that…

Click here. Kellog Brown & Root, a Halliburton subsidiary, just got a no-bid contract to support the U.S. military in Iraq worth up to $568 million. Administration spokesman and partisan commentators will argue that the army awarded the contract, not President Obama, but we all know that one of the responsibilities of the president is to be Commander-in-Chief.

Critics of the Bush Administration frequently tried to paint the Iraq War as being dreamt up and implemented by the military-industrial complex to enrich Vice President Dick Cheney and his buddies. They implied that these men were willing to send soldiers and Iraqis to their deaths for money they didn’t need in the first place because they were rich already. Their evidence? Cheney’s position as VP, his previous position as CEO of Halliburton, and Halliburton being used by the government as a contractor.

This is flimsy evidence that can only be seen as “proof” by people who already saw Cheney and the administration as intrinsically evil. However, just for fun, let’s take this same standard and apply it to the Obama Administration, shall we?

In January, they gave a $25 million no-bid contract to Checchi & Company Consulting, Inc. to support the military in Afghanistan. This company is owned by Vincent V. Checchi, a Democratic fundraiser who gave the maximum amount of $4,400 to Obama’s campaigns as well as donations to the DNC, Senator John Kerry, former Senator John Edwards, former Senate candidate Ned Lamont, and several pro-Democrat groups.

Where are the attacks on Obama’s integrity? Where are the voices decrying the war in Afghanistan as a war concocted and prolonged by the rich military contractors who have hijacked the Administration?

I won’t hold my breath waiting for them. After all, we all know that only conservatives are greedy and using politics and wars to enrich themselves. Don’t we?
