Good news: the media’s obsession with Tiger Woods and his wife Elin Nordegren continues unabated. British newspaper the Telegraph reports that the best golfer who has ever lived and Nordegren might file for divorce in Sweden – that is, if they’re going to divorce. The reason: this will enable them to “keep details of what would be one of the world’s largest settlements under wraps.”

Note how it is news that they may file for divorce in Sweden. Not that they are going to – heck, we don’t even know whether they’re going to divorce in the first place, let alone where – but that they may do so. It’s a sad testament of the state of the media in 2010.

According to reports in American media cited by the Telegraph, the couple is “expected to agree to share parenting and do not want an ‘ugly’ divorce.” In other words, from the looks of it, both want this to be over with as soon as possible so they can move on with their lives.

And that should be good news to all of us: the longer this story dominates the media, the worse off all of us are. There are far more important things going on in the world than a golf player having a troubled marriage. It says all we need to know about the media’s inability to understand what does and doesn’t matter that Woods’ serial infidelity and subsequent wedding troubles continue to make headlines, in both the United States and Europe.

Of course I know that some will ask “why then do you waste another post and 20 minutes of your time on it?” Well, we at NewsReal Blog are here to keep an eye on the media and to criticize them whenever they forsake the responsibilities they have towards society – as they’re doing in the case of Woodsgate. They should be talking about things that actually matter, such as, say, a spokeswoman for the MSA saying she dreams of a Second Holocaust, not about if and where Woods and his wife may file for divorce.
