It’s great to know that when professional journalists aren’t out there “speaking Truth to Power” and losing us the war in Vietnam and so forth, they’re… taking part in acts of juvenile delinquency.

Take Oneita Jackson of the Detroit Free PressShe writes:

Imagine you’re Oneita Big Mouth and you get caught on tape doing something you shouldn’t have been doing, something you’re always checking other people for: making the City of Detroit look bad.

That’s what happened Wednesday after the grand opening ceremony of the Bagley Pedestrian Bridge. I wrote my name on a brand new bench on the bridge.

A reporter for another publication gave me a call to tell me he was writing about vandalism and that he had me on tape, he said, vandalizing the bridge.

Oh, my.

Yep. A reporter who covers the local “boosterism” beat, in Detroit of all places, actually thought it would be a fine idea to scribble narcissistic graffiti on a recently constructed piece of taxpayer property. I really don’t know what to make of this.

Her column offered up her apology, and she’s been suspended until the end of this month.

Isn’t it reassuring to learn what sorts of graduates they’re squeezing out of the nation’s J-schools these days? I may not have much respect for old media types, either, but at least I can’t imagine Dan Rather scrawling “DJ wuz here!” on the Dealey Plaza freeway sign.

The death of the newspaper can’t come soon enough for me.
