Sarah Palin Surprise Support of Fiorina: No Wimps Allowed!

It was but seventy seven years ago that Wimpy murmured to Popeye the Sailor man: “I will gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today”.   Particularly apt this afternoon because Californians are wondering if today is Carly Fiorina’s “Tuesday.”

Following Fiorina’s support during the White House bid, Sarah Palin has now officially endorsed Ms. Fiorina’s bid for the U.S. senate.

With her typical media savvy, Palin posted her support on her facebook page:

Her name is Carly Fiorina, and I’m proud to endorse her for U.S. Senate.

Palin goes on to explain her choice:

Carly is the Commonsense Conservative that California needs and our country could sure use in these trying times. Most importantly, she’s running for the right reasons. She has an understanding that is sorely lacking in D.C. She’s not a career politician. She’s a businesswoman who has run a major corporation. She knows how to really incentivize job creation. Her fiscal conservatism is rooted in real life experience. She knows that when government grows, the private sector shrinks under the burden of debt and deficits. We can trust Carly to do the right thing for America’s economy and to make the principled decisions she has throughout her professional career.

The blogosphere and the media are abuzz though…breathlessly and quizzically  pontificating with ‘WHY WOULD PALIN SUPPORT SOMEONE OTHER THAN THE TEA PARTY CANDIDATE?”  According to the Washington Post, Palin has jumped ship:

The most conservative candidate in the race, Assemblyman Chuck DeVore, has been endorsed by Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) and the Tea Party Express.

At this point, only Sarah Palin knows what is in Sarah Palin’s mind.  Is this the Tuesday burger payback for the support in Nov. of ’08?   Is it Sarah being Sarah and refusing to toe any party line, including that of the Tea Party?   Is it a chick thing?  I suspect it may be some of the latter, but not because both Palin and Fiorina are women…but because the Democratic foe is!  Palin goes on to post this:

Please consider that Carly is the conservative who has the potential to beat California’s liberal senator, Barbara Boxer, in November. I’m a huge proponent of contested primaries, so I’m glad to see the contest in California’s GOP, but I support Carly as she fights through a tough primary against a liberal member of the GOP who seems to bear almost no difference to Boxer, one of the most leftwing members of the Senate. Carly needs our support in this crucial election year when we have a real chance of putting an end to the Pelosi/Reid “Big Government” agenda.

Strikes me as clever, and one would hope an effective strategy for victory.  Not necessarily popular, but we already know that “popular” isn’t really Palin’s gig either.
