Romney 2012 is Off to a Bad Start

President Obama has used Mitt Romney, who he accurately referred to as a “presidential candidate,” to defend his health care plan. And last night on The Daily Show, Rep. John Dingell (D-M.I.) described Romney as a supporter of the individual mandate and Jon Stewart remarked that Republican Senators actually proposed the idea back in 1993. Pretty soon, with both Democrats and Republicans taking this line, the wheels on the Romney 2012 train are going to become loose and the question is whether they will come off.

Americans dislike big government on principle, but in 2012, opponents of the health care bill will have to also explain how the mandate and further government intrusion doesn’t work. The health care situation is bad enough that Americans are willing to backslide on their instincts against big government if they are convinced that it’ll help alleviate the problems. The GOP, therefore, will have to zero in on Stewart’s question about how the insurance companies can raise prices and Americans, required to buy insurance, will have to pay up. The DNC will have to reply, as Dingell did, by talking about price controls or the public option—not political winners.

But the GOP can’t take this line if Romney is the nominee, because those problems exist with his own plan. Romney may be the frontrunner right now, but that’s not the best spot to be this early in the race.
