Will Coburn Be Punished for Calling Obama and Pelosi Good People?

Political disagreements in the U.S. are harsh, and generally, the opposition is always the most juvenile. It seems under every administration, the opposition party does whatever it can to make the public believe the president is a liar, tyrant, traitor, extremist ideologue, or any other negative adjective, and often the party in power responds with equal incivility.

And these same legions will eat you alive if they catch you defending their opponents or even moderating your dissent so it isn’t personal. We saw despicable attacks on Bush’s integrity when he was in office, and luckily it hasn’t gotten to that level (yet) under the current president. The point is: Both sides are guilty.

Enter Republican Senator Tom Coburn, a good friend of President Obama’s despite their political incompatibility.

He recently described Nancy Pelosi as a “nice lady” when an attendee at a town hall meeting alleged that the new health care legislation could force you to go to jail if you don’t buy health insurance. The audience jeered, prompting Coburn to ask them how many have actually met her, saying, “Just because somebody disagrees with you doesn’t mean they’re not a good person.”

He then took some jabs at Fox News:

“The intention is not to put any one in jail. That makes for good TV news on Fox but that isn’t the intention…So don’t catch yourself being biased by Fox News that somebody is no good. The people in Washington are good. They just don’t know what they don’t know.”

He’s previously called Obama “a wonderful man” who he has “a lot of admiration for” despite being “180 degrees from him on policy on most issues.”

And now Senator Jim Inhofe has vindicated Coburn’s concern by becoming an example of exactly what he was talking about. “There’s nothing nice about Nancy,” he said in response. And what reason did he give as he finished that thought? “She disagrees with everything we believe.”
