And “malpractice” isn’t too strong a word:
The Associated Press ran a story about how the mentally unstable man who shot Pope John Paul II believes that Benedict should resign.
Anyhow. I’ve been covering this story since the 1980s, when I worked at a Canadian Catholic newspaper. Then I felt was to take it up again as a newbie blogger, when America endured its own scandals in the 1990s.
And I’m now, after twenty depressing years, I’m officially sick of these stories, and pretty much everybody involved. So shoot me.
However, I couldn’t let this one go: I’ll just reprint the brief Catholic News Agency report in its entirety:
The Catholic League has accepted NBC’s apology for a section headline which said Pope Benedict XVI molested children.
On the website of MSNBC under the article, “Losing Their Religion? Catholicism in Turmoil,” the related content subsection linked to an article title reading, “Pope Describes Touching Boys: I Went Too Far.”
According to the Catholic League, this article said nothing about the Pope but discussed a homosexual German priest who had sexual relations with males in the 1980s.
On Tuesday Catholic League president Bill Donohue charged that the headline painted Pope Benedict as a child molester and called for an apology.
Later that day NBC apologized for the article.
To paraphrase Jefferson: I tremble for my country when I reflect that they get their “facts” from the MSM.
