I was fascinated by Elise Cooper’s excellent two-part War On Terror interview with former Bush Administration homeland security advisor Frances Townsend.  Cooper asked questions that opened some doors for enlightening responses.  But Townsend’s rhetoric and dancing around the one unmentionable word reflected the Bush Administration’s view of our Big Problem, too perfectly.  She opened with this:

“NewsReal Blog: You recently visited Saudi Arabia. What were your impressions?

Frances Townsend: They are very worried about regional security issues. They are surrounded on all sides: Iraq to the North, Yemen to the South, and Iran to the East, not to mention Somalia. Although they are the strongest in the region, this is of shallow comfort.”

Now that is one dumbfounding idea, given their ongoing funding of Mosque construction, madrassas, radical Muslim student groups on American campuses, and the de facto purchases (via large cash “donations”) of large sections of American universities to build Arab (read that: Islamic) Studies departments, not to mention Fox News.  Equally interesting was this:

“NRB: Why do you think the terrorists want to attack America?

Townsend: As a society we need to come to grips with the fact there are people that hate us. By and large, there are enough people around the globe that disagree with American foreign policy, domestic policy, and culture; yet, only a fraction will act on it and try to kill us. I think they hate our Democratic society, the freedom of speech, freedom of thought, and freedom of religion.”

Here we have the wearying anti-American foreign policy, anti-American culture (corruptness implied here), and the good old “tiny minority” of people who hate us enough to actually strike us arguments.  The verboten word is still absent from Townsend’s language.

“NRB: What do you see as the biggest threat today?

Townsend: Recruiting Americans. As Al Qaeda increases its priority they are more successful in recruiting within the US. Couple that with this guy from New Jersey, (Sharif Mobley,) who worked at a nuclear power plant and you understand the potential magnitude of that threat. People who can be recruited or are self-radicalized are problems if they become American operatives for Al Qaeda.”

Ah, yes, back to al Qaida we go, as the recruiters for something un-named, and don’t forget the “self-radicalizers” to something else un-named.  My head hurts.  Then we have this:

“NRB: How can we identify the “American Al Qaeda operative?”

Townsend: One of the biggest impediments in identifying them is ending the political correctness. Look at Hasan (the Major who murdered fellow soldiers at Fort Hood,) there were a number of signs that this guy self-radicalized and was prepared to act. Yet the system was not triggered. Everyone was afraid of accusing him because he was one of the few Muslim doctors in the service. I am a great believer in following the facts regardless of where they take you. We have to get over that the facts might lead us in an uncomfortable direction.”

Indeed, we have here an Orwellian response in the extreme.  Townsend asserts we must end political correctness as she answers the question with polished political correctness.  Lastly, she gives us the solution to our Big Problem:

“Townsend: I recognize that the majority of Muslims in this country are peaceful people. In any religion and population there will be some small fraction that is willing to resort to violent acts. By having a dialogue we can combat the internet propaganda of hatred.”

Yep.  I knew it all along.  It’s that doggoned inter-net.  Gotta have the old dialogue to stop it.  And you’ve just got to keep a sharp eye out for those rampaging, rioting, pillaging, murdering Christians, Jews and Hindus. It’s going to be awhile before we’re ready to have this little talk about the “I” word, folks.
