Don’t Fill out your Census Form until you Read This!

2010 March 17

Just received via email:

The 10-year census is only to count the number of people in your house.  Period.  With that in mind, many people are suggesting that we fill out our census forms as follows and mail it back.  Do not answer further questions from any census workers who come to your door.  Do as you see fit.
1.  Enter the number of people who live in your house.
2-5.   Skip.
6.  Check male or female.
7.  Enter age only, not date of birth.
8.  Skip.
9.  Check “Some other race” and write in “American”.
10.  Skip.
Again, these are just suggestions from Patriots who have researched the census.  Do what you want.

Don't they already have your date of birth from Social Security, your passport and just about every other document you have?

    • March 22, 2010

Yes — EXCEPT that Federal Law prohibits agencies from sharing information about you between themselves. So no, the COMMERCE DEPT. doesn't know those things about you.

      • March 22, 2010

Well, they're getting big bucks to stick their collective noses in my business so let them figure it out! And if they show up at the door I will dazzle them with my "old woman" footwork, and baffle them with my limited German!

      • March 23, 2010

True, however the Census is being run by the White House.

    • May 17, 2010

u damn rite they dont need to no everything about u an what u do were amaricans aint we supposed to b free

  2. March 17, 2010

You are better off not answering than giving any answer they can call false because the punishment for providing false information is more severe than refusing to answer.

The ONLY question you should answer, IMO, is the number of people in the residence. That is all they need to determine which states get so many representatives for the House per the population of the state.

    • May 5, 2010

Exercise your constitutional right of NOT answering any of the questions, period! Also, there is a right to privacy act that we are all entitled to. You know those who are here illegally will not respond, so the 2010 census will still not be an accurate accounting. As far as answering only the # of residence in the house, a lot more damage can be done with that info any way. With current gov't info, anyone can be found as it is, so there is not any need to complete the census. Besides, is there a budget crisis? Even if it's minimum wage, why is $$ being spent on these so-called census "officers?"

      • May 20, 2010

Question what bis the penalty for not filling that census report? also why do they need all that other vpersonal information? They got my home phone number and started calling. Everytime they have called they woke the baby up early in the morning or came and knocked on my door at nap time while the baby was asleep. They said they would make six visits they have came over every day and everytime i was either getting dress or not dressed. What is really going on. Thay just need numbers all the other info is too personal. It seems like they already know who is in your home by social security cards thatb are issued per person per household. If they need me to answer all those questions why is it they already got my phone number>?

  3. March 17, 2010

Oh give it a break David .Now we reach the heights of the ridiculous in "dark conspiracies " . For petes sake you can google some ones name and get much more info , than you put on the census form .

And Christopher , you gotta give your name else they dont know who the hek is residing at the location and a rough demographic .

MAN !!! if you guys are afraid of a bloody Census form , then go live on a secluded mountain with no mailing address . " THEY " wont look for you there .

    • March 17, 2010

Or maybe we could start pushing back by every legal means at our disposal instead of being led about like sheep.

    • March 17, 2010

BAAAAAAAA. BAAAAAAAAAA. BBAAAAAAAAAA. sheeple Toss it. Do not answer the door. Neeveer got it.
      BAAAAAAAAAA. BBBAAAAAAA.

      • March 18, 2010

Man , go hide under your bed . haven't you guys got enough windmills to fight without inventing more ?
The census has been going on for a long time , you think you're parents or grandparents were so PARANOID ????

        Yea there's the answer , "don't answer your door " ….brilliant .! Let's everybody do it …..and then "THEY'll " never know we're here ….riiiight .

        • March 18, 2010

Chances are you're one of the people who were beet-faced with outrage that antiterror investigators could examine public library records and put an ear to phone calls coming into the country from suspected Al Qaeda members. Y'all thought the Patriot Act–giving antiterror enforcement the same tools that were already used against the mob–was the beginning of fascism in America.

          • March 18, 2010

Keep your day job Radegunda , I'm 110% all for the Patriot act . So in "assumptions " , you kinda fall flat on Y'All's face . Not to mention , you're analogy is about as bright as your disconnected statement .
This is a CENSUS , if you have a drivers license , credit card , bank account , mortgage loan , or ever filed a tax return , there's more info about you on the internet than any simple Census form can render .
Better go read your own post again pal , it's self contradictory , not to mention barely coherent in its direction .

            • March 18, 2010

My statement is neither "disconnected" (from what?) nor self-contradictory. Perhaps I made a wrong assumption about your view of the Patriot Act—but that's not "self-contradictory." My point was that some people (perhaps not you) are spitting with rage over the government's alleged lack of sensitivity toward the privacy rights of foreign terrorists and terror suspects, but then turn around and say the right wing is paranoid about the government's invasion of the privacy of innocent citizens. If you didn't understand that point, then the problem is in "you're" [sic] reading comprehension; you obviously find basic spelling and grammar a bit challenging.

So maybe some of the information they're asking for exists on databases somewhere; some of it probably doesn't. Aren't you bothered just a little bit by how the federal government has turned the census into a huge exercise in collecting masses of personal data about every citizen? When you read the questions, don't you even begin to wonder why in heck they need the answers to those questions?

Yes, it's SUPPOSED to be a CENSUS—meaning an enumeration. Everything else is, or should be, irrelevant. I'm sorry that you cannot understand that.

          March 18, 2010

Come on eyes-why do you think they want this specific information about age and race? The government is mining for information to manipulate the lay out for voting districts for future elections. This is deadly serious and has nothing to do with paranoia. If you are confident that Black, Latino and young voters will swing democrat- you can give yourself a pretty good leg up if you re-district accordingly.

          • May 23, 2010

You do know they've asked that same question for more than 100 years?

        • March 19, 2010

The purpose of the Constitutionally mandated census is for the purpose of "Enurmeration" If you have difficulty with the defintion of the word look it up. Any other questions on the form are not the government's business and can be obtained at their liesure from any number of other sources already in place.

          • May 23, 2010

yes, that's correct so why be a baby and leave the question blank? All you're doing is spending more tax dollars on the paycheck for the government employee that has to research the information.

            • May 26, 2010

You can be a lapdog for the government if you wish- that is your right. I, for one, do not wish to help this administration or its minions any more than I absolutely have to

    • March 19, 2010

ewo – what are you so angry about?

    • March 23, 2010

obviously "eyes wide open" is a liberalist and agrees the depth of the census questions is just A OK for the government to ask. You are crazy as hell if you think you can get the information asked on the census from google. Nice try but you, nor your liberalist crazies are going to convince me otherwise. Being afraid has nothing to do with it, you DA. It is about our right to privacy and not needing to disclose information that is not needed for a census. If the government wants so much information then let them google as you say….or at least look at the IRS records.

      • March 23, 2010

Prime example asking about your health insurance. HIPPA prevents them from receiving this information so they are trying to backdoor the answer. Wonder if that will be shared with HHS and IRS thanks to the new health care law.

    • March 30, 2010

Just keep drinking that Kool-Aid…… Eyes wide open, but seeing only what I want to see, should be your posting name.

    • June 8, 2010

Thank you eyes wide open! As a U.S. census enumerator, I appreciate your comments. It is amazing the number of people who believe there is a government conspiracy related to the census, and refuse to provide the information requested. I was just quoted "David Horowitz" as a reason for refusing to provide census information, thus my reason for checking out the site. I only hope these individuals declaring themselves "patriots" are actively involved in local, state, or government politics to effect the change they believe in. Those that believe they are "making a statement" by not providing the information, are only hurting their community; hindering the possibility federal funding in their community, as well as affecting the political boundaries of the communities they live in. Shame on them. Shame on their attitudes too, as those individuals tend to yell abusively and slam doors in enumerator faces. Oh well, all I can say is "it takes all kinds"; your comments were a breath of fresh air on this site, thank you!!!!!

  4. March 17, 2010

I filled out the number of people living in my house, that's it. The purpose of the census is to determine the number of people living in your district, so it can be further determined the number of representatives your district should have and also whatever monies your distict should receive.
In order to make these determinations, there is no need for the government to know my sex, race, ethnic origins and certainly no need for them to know whether or not I own my own outright.

  5. March 17, 2010

    Good advice as always.

    Thanks David!

  6. March 17, 2010

I have a gate on my porch with a “no Trespassing” sign. Behind that, I have a 80 lb Akita/chow mix that can’t stand company. I suggest the same for you guys!! I think my husband threw the census paper in the trash, he thinks it’s funny to have visitors!

    • March 18, 2010

Ahh yes a true patriot , did your husband tear up his drivers license too ? Besides , I don't think anyone would want to visit your house anyway .

      • March 18, 2010

I think your eyes are shut…..and your head is buried in the sand.

      • March 22, 2010

Her husband probably paid for his drivers license. Not to mention he voluntarily got it himself.

Really, you trolls need to think before posting.

      • April 5, 2010

        I smell a troll…

For those not familiar with that term, it's a poster whose hobby is to post provocative things just to stir up the ants & watch them run around. Trolls, being of limited intelligence, find this just too funny for words.

DO NOT FEED THE TROLLS. It only encourages them.

  7. March 18, 2010

My country saved Asia from the Japs and Africa form the Nazis and Russia from the Commies
This is a Free country Patriot
and you are free to leave.
I am proud of the things we have done as a nation and I am certainly not going to try and
    SABOTAGE our Census.

    • March 19, 2010

And what have you done, Don?
The Constitution was set up to limit government power; information is power. If they want additional information then enumeration, then ask for it elsewhere, and do not confuse the issue by including those requests in a census.
Paranoid? Law abiding citizens who registered their firearms in NYC had those same lists used to confiscate those firearms after being told its just to register them, dont be paranoid.
Limiting the information given above and beyond enumeration is not sabotage.
(BTW, proudly served in the USAF, visiting Iraq and Kuwait a few hours at a time)

    • March 23, 2010

I suppose you also like the idea that military members, assigned overseas, are not included in the Census.

  8. March 18, 2010

    Really?

  9. March 18, 2010

Mr. Horowitz is correct. The constittion states that the govt is only to record the number of people living in your home in the census. Gathering any more information is a violation of the fourth amendment and would require a search warrant from a judge.

  10. March 18, 2010

Eyes Wide Open, you have an attitude problem. Just saying….

    • May 14, 2010

Eyes wide open: I totally agree! the goverment is already challenging the right to bear arms and freedon of speech. Now the census wants more information, then how many are in the household? People can say what they want about conspiracy, but I had a question asked for my neice and newphew age 12 and 8 on a MEDICAL questionaire if we had guns in the house! If we used recreational drugs, do you have AIDS. First of all That is none of there bussiness! that all is personal and confidential information is protected by patient, doctor confidentiality laws. but they tried to ask and I told them to mind there own bussiness and I would not answer person question that are suppose to protected by law. So if any one thinks that I am having conspiracy issues, then ask yourself this before you judge me. Why would the goverment want to know everything about us? why would they ask question that are protected by our constitution and why would they be intrested and what are they going to do with the information?__If we have to answer question like this, then why do we have a constitution that is suppose to protect us?__ Ya exactly! I rest my case!!!!

  11. March 18, 2010

    Honestly,
the more we let them infringe on rights that we still have and do nothing to combat the ones we have left
then we are destine to live the way we are according to the constitution we are to implement a new government when the one in current power ceases to be for the people by the people and decides that it is so powerful and wise that at will and without permission or provocation can take
away from our constitutional rights I mean really what is an amendment other than something saying
that the old contract is null this is the new one by the time they are done we'll have no rights unless we
as a nation together do something to drastically change the way we are headed.
Now with people like that writing agendas and ordering census papers or honestly taxes on earnings spending savings home car or anything else the government taxes so those taxes can go to among other things a census witch by the way probably took our tax dollars/truly hard earned money and turned it into another way to spend more of our money and steal more of our freedoms dammit i say enough !!

  12. March 18, 2010

I stopped at my name. I know you're supposed to put your Social Security number on there but they never asked for it.

    • April 5, 2010

Nope. They have the right to ask only ONE question: "How many live at this dwelling." All other queries are unconstitutional!

I think they should fine-tune that ONE question to say, "How many LEGAL U.S. citizens are at this address." As it stands now, the question assumes illegal aliens are just as much citizens as real citizens are, & since the entire REASON for the census is to know how many representatives a district should be allowed, & because ILLEGAL ALIENS can't LEGALLY VOTE (yet…), then it should be made more clear. People who aren't voters have no reason or business in filling it out. PERIOD.

Yet we're being hounded from many directions (expensively!) to fill out the census — including illegals! (Meals On Wheels just sent me a letter to that effect!)–so obviously this is just another way to get & keep the Far Left in power, & surrender our country's borders!

      "POUND SAND," indeed, Census takers!

    • June 8, 2010

No, I'm an enumerator for the census, and they don't ask for your social security number.

  13. March 18, 2010

I noticed that the questionnaire does not ask how many U.S. citizens are living in the home, and how many non-citizens are living in the home. The assumption will obviously be that every response is from a legal citizen, no matter what. This will knowingly (and intentionally?) result in an overcount by the number of illegals who responded in each area. This will give the southern states, and especially California, more representatives than they should legally have, at the expense of all other states. I suppose it would have been vastly too complex and expensive to have had that simple question on the census questionnaire. Not.

    • March 19, 2010

Additionally, they ask for the race of the individual which will equate into hiring practices in race based quotas and Affirmative Action type schemes.

    • March 22, 2010

Actually, the constitution requires a count of the people, not a count of the citizens. Yes, that means non-citizens are represented in Congress. This isn't a bad thing; the bad thing is that we allow non-citizens here illegally to stay…

      • April 5, 2010

Okay, you might have a point. Still, in an era when the PTBs in D.C. & elsewhere are howling for the U.S. to lose its "old-fashioned, repressive, yadda, yadda, YADDA sovereignty, I still think it's time to make the point in every way possible that we don't want illegals here!

    • March 22, 2010

Non citizens have always been counted. They counted Slaves as 2/5ths and non citizens as one.

    • March 23, 2010

Good point, no problem with counting everyone however they should have had a simple question as to whether one is a citizen or non-citizen. That way the apportionment of Representatives, voting roles, etc. would be based on citizens of the United States of America.

    • May 4, 2010

You are a complete dumb ass! The purpose of the census is to count how many people live in the united states. Do you need a definition of the word people?

  14. March 18, 2010

Also by getting your financial information the liberals can create programs that will
perpetuate class warfare. The 'evil rich' will be ostracized while those making under
a certain amount will become more of the voting block for the liberals.

  15. March 18, 2010

No , I'm NOT the least bit worried , because it's JUST a CENSUS , no different than any other .It happens every 10 years and has been .It's got NOTHING to do with leftys or rightys or liberals , there no "dark conspiracy " to do something "bad " to you or anyone else .And your statement WAS in fact contradictory in that you attack my statement by ASSUMING I was outraged at the Patriot Act , yet how do you reach that conclusion when I clearly state I have no problem with the Census ???? The Federal Government hasn't "turned " the census inrto anything . I undersdtand your grammar perfectly , it is that of a paranoid ,
looking for yet another thing to blame on those lefties and liberals .
Do you have a credit card [s] ?

If you're intimidated by a census form , how in the hell do you fill out credit card applications ?

    • March 18, 2010

It is not JUST a CENSUS when the questions asked go far beyond enumeration. It IS "different than" [sic--i.e. from] any other to the extent that it asks more intrusive questions than earlier instances.

I've had one credit card for many years. The census demands information that could not possibly have been on that application.

You have not addressed the basic question of WHY the federal government is asking questions about employment, mortgages, etc., on what is SUPPOSED to be simply an ENUMERATION. Please look up the word "enumeration." And "census." And "contradictory." Those concepts are obviously difficult for you to grasp. That's probably why you have to resort to throwing around the label "paranoid."

Also please get some remedial help with your grammar. Are you a recent product of our wonderful government schools?

    • March 18, 2010

Also, please learn how to use the "Reply" button. It isn't very hard–for most of us.

    • March 22, 2010

A credit card application is by choice and we know there wont be a hidden "dark conspiracy." Really, do you trust them…sheep to the slaughter.

  16. March 18, 2010

I am not going to answer "all" of the questions on my census. It is none of their "damn" business. Not putting in name. Only male and female. Ages (No birthdate) How many people live here. Yes I will do that. Whether I own or rent or other is none of their damn business. What color I am am is none of their business either. I will just put other (American) The census they sent out this year is ridiculous. All they need to really no is how many live here.

    • March 19, 2010

If you think this census form is intrusive just wait until you get the random mailed ACS in the mail. That is MANDATORY you fill out the questions under penaltes and fines and imprisonment. Those questions make this census questionaire look completely tame. They even ask you what time you leave for work, who your employer is and even more personal questions like how many females from 15 to 60 in your home are fertile. It is absolutely incredible.

    • March 22, 2010

"American" is the wrong answer; "Human" is the correct one.

  17. March 18, 2010

Althought asking questions beyond the number of people in your home in the census is unconstitutional, it is legal by law to do so. You may be fined $100 per question not answered — $5,000 max. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=matl8i9kc7w

    • March 18, 2010

If it is unconstitutional, it is not legal to do so.

No law can be written that is above the intent of the Constitution without going through the amendment process.

      • March 19, 2010

I agree. This a bad law and needs to be challenged by the supreme court.

Until then, the fines will be enforced.

    • March 23, 2010

I'll be more than happy to answer their question…

Just as soon as they produce a search warrant addressed specifically to me asking the specific questions.

    • March 23, 2010

Simple response, 5th Amendment rights against self incrimination.

    • April 5, 2010

Oh heck, they can charge me a bajillion bucks per. Matters not; I HAVE no money, thanks to President Alinsky! LOL!

  18. March 18, 2010

Liberty is worth the price of any "fine" they want to impose. Personally, I've had enough and I will let the government know that they have over stepped there boundaries in every way I possibly can. Let freedom ring.

  19. March 18, 2010

It is different from previous census forms. In my parent's day they did not ask all of this stuff about race. The reason for their need for these "statistics" is Gerrymandering – plain and simple. It is past time to stop cooperating.

  20. March 18, 2010

I'm with the minimalists here. The purpose of gathering ethnic data is gerrymandering. All they need to know is the number of people at the address. I'm not interested in furthering the government's interest.

  21. March 18, 2010

I launched a site Saturday night called http://www.CheckAmerican.org. Thought you might be interested. CheckAmerican.org is a national campaign to encourage citizens to write in “American” as their race on the 2010 U.S. Census. The idea for this campaign spawned from comments Rush Limbaugh made during his March 11th show, when he told his listeners, “I want you to check the box that says ”Other”, and write in “American”.

  22. March 18, 2010

I'm not usually one to question such things as the census but, this year it seems more like a marketing questionaire than a traditional census. The census was conceived to "count heads", nothing more. Now it seems it's to be used to sell us something, with penalties if you don't answer. That seems just..well..wrong. Add to this queasy feeling the fact that the census is moved into the White House from the Commerce Department…I don't know. Maybe I'm just being paranoid,… but in a good way?

  23. March 18, 2010

The only practical question is the real risk associated with resistance, or should I say civil disobedience.

The constitution calls for, and operating the House of Reprobates correctly requires a head count by state. That's it.

Everything else in the census is either to support unconstitutional activities of the gov't, or to facilitate politicians' pursuit of power. Period.

Now what to do about it?

How good really is the chance of getting busted for not answering their damned nosy questions.

If it's legal for them to ask for information beyond head count, (and I doubt that that would stand up to constitutional review), then it certainly ought to be legal to refuse to answer, or even lie, by any sense of equity.

But, maybe it's time to just start resisting and leave off calculating the risk.

    • March 20, 2010

Just a thought……. what if when you lick the envelope to seal this census the government put a chemical in the glue that influences the minds of the people for more government control. I thought of this one lick too late! I am starting to feel funny now that I mention this, the mind control must be taking effect.

  24. March 18, 2010

Of course, every census since the first one asked had race-related questions. And questions well beyond just the number of people in a household (including age, sex, occupation, race, place of birth, etc.) have been part of the census since 1850. That census even asked questions about the value of real estate.

But I guess Millard Fillmore was a socialist stooge.

The Constitution calls for an enumeration. But Congress is free to pass laws relating to how that enumeration is carried out. You all act like this is some kind of newly-hatched nefarious plot. Did you feel the same way about the 2000 census, under the administration of one George Bush?

    • March 19, 2010

Considering the flagrant power grab that is currently happening in the white house, there ought to be some pause for reflection about the reasons behind what politicians are doing. I think that is still my right to do so. If you wish to be an apologist for the ploiticians, please feel free to do so.

    • March 19, 2010

Eh? Bush didn't take office until 2001. The 2000 census was under Clinton's administration.

But no, I wasn't nearly as concerned about that census, because Clinton didn't have the same opportunities (nor, I think, the inclination) to misuse it.

      • March 24, 2010

I believe LostSailor was talking about the FIRST President Bush. After all, he was at the helm when the 1990 census was administered. And that version actually asked more intrusive questions than this year's census.

    • March 22, 2010

Aside from the fact the 2000 Census was under Clinton, yes, I was as pissed off them as I am now.

And now, like then, I will answer just the first question.

      • March 24, 2010

There are two George Bushes. In 1990, the census was administered by George Bush's administration. And that form included income information questions.

Bill Clinton was president during the last census.

  25. March 18, 2010

Other than exxactly how many live in my home. I believe all is a matter of public record. KMA if I will do their work for them, jsut to have this ideology stuck where the lite don't shine. This curretn gov deserves no help from any american.

  26. March 19, 2010

Unfortunately, the law (Title 13) requires that you honestly answer the census questions, and it delineates the punishments for refusing to answer, or for providing false information.

I plan to honestly answer every single question.

I will tell them how many people are in my house, and whether or not there are additional people in my house.

I will refer them to my State Department of Assessment & Taxation, and my County Courthouse, to obtain the ownership and mortgage status of my house.

I will refer them to Directory Assistance to obtain the telephone number of my house.

I will refer them to the IRS, and my State Comptroller, to obtain the names of all the individuals in my home that are listed on my tax return forms.

I will refer them to the SSA to obtain the sex, birth date, ethnicity, and race from Form SS-5 filed with the SSA for each person noted above, and I will recommend that they do themath of subtracting the birth date from today to obtain each person's age.

And I will tell them if any person sometimes lives or stays somewhere else.

  27. March 19, 2010

As for the gerrymandering issue, there is a very simple solution to that problem (which means that politicians will not implement it). You simply make it a law that the boundaries of all congressional districts, with the exception those boundaries that follow the state borders, must be made up of straight lines with vertices such that a line drawn between any two vertices will lie within the boundaries of the district, and that the number of citizens within each district be equal. A computer can do that in a second or less. That process would completely eliminate the "spider web" of gerrymandered districts that we see today, and it would make it very difficult to "massage" the polygons around.

    • March 19, 2010

      Excellent idea…

Damn! There's lots of smart jarheads around here!

      oooh rahhh!

      fs

    • March 22, 2010

My solution to Gerrymandering is all reps are at large withing the state. Every election chose however many you have for your state and the top x win. For example. If your state has 10, you vote for the 10 you want and then the top 10 win.

  28. March 19, 2010

Not all that worried about the census per se, BUT they do hire a lot of "temporary workers", and their vetting process is proven to be suspect. A birth date can come in very handy for stealing one's identity, and I do not intend to give them that…if it costs me $100, that's better than having someone find a way to clean out my bank accounts!

    • March 19, 2010

I don't remember the 2000 census being so intrusive. Really all they need is to count the number of people in the houselhold, I guess they break down the ages as well, that is probably why they want the birthday's, I guess they break down age brackets as well, so they know how much money they need to spend on certain appropiations. I agree with you, however, with reference to birthdays and SS numbers, after all these are going through the mail and have to go through the post office. There really is no real secure way for our information to remain a secret as they say. Of course tampering with the US Mail is a federal offense, but then you never know.

    • March 19, 2010

I have a very similar dilemma on the race issue. They never take into account how many of we Americans are the actual products of the melting pot.

      • March 19, 2010

No, we are not allowed the dignity of our heritage….the fact that our ancestors \”melted\” gets us labeled as simply \”white!\”

The one line, in the constitution, that is overlooked is "in such manner as they shall by law direct". This will be their fall back as to if the census and the questions contained therein are to be answered fully or not.

If they have made it law that these are the questions that need to be answered then it is illegal to not answer them.

One may actually be setting ones self up for more government intrusion by not answering questions.

    Just a thought.

    • March 22, 2010

As soon as they can prove to me how asking my age has any relevance to an enumeration, I'll happily comply.

  31. March 19, 2010

I like the listing race as American suggestion and am going to do my part to help Uncle Sam get over his racism issues by listing mine as such.

  32. March 22, 2010

Were we this concerned when it was the Bush census, YES. BTW, the census' own attached literature states that this info "cannot be obtained by law enforcement or tax collection agencies. Your answers cannot be used in court. They cannot be obtained with a FOIA request." So, they say they will fine me, who enforces that, and how do they ( whoever will institute the fine) get their information to do so? Is the census bureau now a law enforcement agency?

    • April 5, 2010

UnHuh…& we all know how well-run, efficient & honest D.C. pols & bureaucrats are, don't we.

Nope. Pound sand, gummint lackeys. You're not my boss. I am YOURS, just fyi!

  33. March 22, 2010

American Community Survey. It is mailed to 250,000 households per month and is the most intrusive survey you have ever seen. The harrassment you will reeive from not filling it out is unreal.

      Duh-huh….LOL!

  35. March 22, 2010

When reading the Census form after Start Here the first thing is says is Census must count every person living in the US on April 1, 2010. Also April 1,2010 is repeated at least 4 times threw question 2. I stratched my head and thought I can not answer any ot these questions til april 1, 2010. How do I know if I will be living at this address on this date? I hope to be. There is a lot that can happen in 1 day! If you have someone in jail and not sure if they will be realeased on march 31, april 1 or maybe not til the 2nd. Gee that changes your answers.

  36. March 22, 2010

    Does that mean it's okay?

  37. March 22, 2010

Yes they are if the sign clearly states "NO TRESPASSING".

    • May 5, 2010

Hey DUMBASS really no trespasing how do they check your electric bill? or water bill? and if yo
u have an emergency then your trespasing sign might kill you DUMBASS!!! LMAO!!!!

      • May 5, 2010

Well part of signing up for electricity and water is you grant them permission to come read your meter, although ours can be read without entering the property (they have a nifty device that allows them to read it from quite some distance).

There's not an emergency response team in the nation that will see a "No Trespassing" sign and turn away.

Now who is the Dumbass? Yep. That would be you.

Now, back to the original point; nowhere is there a law that says a Census worker can enter property with a No Trespassing sign. I guess the OP could always put an addition at the bottom — "And That Includes Census Workers!" to be extra clear…

  39. March 22, 2010

1790? During the days of legal slavery? As a previous poster noted, it's high time our federal government got over counting citizens by race. That only perpetuates institutional racism. I'm writing in 'HUMAN'.

  40. March 22, 2010

I got my back up when the WH took over the census.

  41. March 22, 2010

I refuse to put my kids' name and dates of birth.. I put 4 people and American in race…

  42. March 22, 2010

Yes back when Slaves were 2/5ths of a person there was a reason. Now?

  43. March 23, 2010

Actually, the census takers put down what they thought the race was (1850 and beyond). So some lighter skinned black families were sometimes listed as white. Similarly, native americans and darker skinned "white" people were sometimes given a black designation. At least through 1960, the census was done going door to door. As a genealogy buff, it saddens me that the census, a wonderful historical resource, is being used in such a way.

  45. March 23, 2010

Uhhh…..You DO realize they had slavery back in the 1790s and needed to determine the race of those at a residence especially a plantation. Hello, anyone home?

  46. March 23, 2010

It isn't; they tried to pull it under the umbrella of the White House, but all the census stuff I have received still says commerce dept. on it.

  47. March 23, 2010

The commerce dept. is the agency, under the White House, where questions and responses are sent. It is still controlled by the White House.

    • March 23, 2010

In so far as it is part of the executive branch, sure. But then this is how it's always been done. The commerce dept. has been running the census since it (the commerce dept.) was created.

What the White House tried to do earlier was actually bring the census into the White House itself.

  48. March 23, 2010

The Census form itself, yes. However they send out the American Community Survey (every month, every year) also and then try to say that it is part of the Census and you must answer all the questions.

  49. March 23, 2010

I filled out mind completely. I didn't want a ACORN worker peeking in my home, and come back afterhours and steal my goodies. Times is tight and I know they don't get paid much, only the supervisors do..

  50. March 30, 2010

Uh, no. They aren't coming for us; they won't be able to FIND us. YOU'RE the one telling them all aboout yourself, Bub, & when you do something they don't like, you'll find that out.

Yeesh. Maybe we should stop warning the really stooopit ones…& let nature (well, the gummint, at least) take its course?

  52. March 31, 2010

This is the first year ever that The White has been in charge of running the Census, another power grab. I can see Rahn Emanuel pouring over the detailed demographics so that he cn personally jerrymander the Congressional Districts with as many minorities as possible (historically Democratic voters) so that the Liberal/Progressive Democrats can keep their grip on power. It is none of their business who owns my home, if my child is adopted or a Foster child or my birth child, too much info can be very dangerous in the hands of these radicals. The Socialists want power and want to control everything.

  56. April 5, 2010

Eyes wide open… I assume you didn't catch a census worker with their back to your front door entering GPS coordinates into a hand held computer, If you had, as I did, you might take a different view. Frankly, I 've had a gut full of The Federal Government.

    • April 20, 2010

      Hammer,

They are not supposed to come to your back door, but sometime people have trouble finding the front door. I’ve had a problem with that myself while working for the Census in 2000 and early 2009.

I worked for the 2000 Census and did address Canvassing in early 2009 as I said below I won’t be working for the Census this summer by choice.

The hand held was only used in the beginning of 2009 and won’t be used this summer. It was used to record all addresses in the entire U.S. and they did use GPS, but there was nothing political about it.

Also, all the planning for the GPS units were decided and planned under the Bush Administration although again, the Census IS NOT political.

It takes years in advance to plan the 10 year Census which of course is every 10 years.

  57. April 13, 2010

they are making a complete data base to take our guns. Dont let them take our guns.

  58. April 20, 2010

I worked for the Census under George Bush in 2000 and the form was even longer and asked for a lot more information.

Who the president is has ZERO to do with the Census. It’s taken every 10 years period and they have always asked some pretty personal stuff.

This year I decided not to work for the Census because of the crazy paranoid morons who listen to talk radio, not even $13 an hour is worth putting up with all that. Working for the Census in the year 2000 was hard enough, now all this nonsense.

For the record the Census is all about funding,it is NOT political, and each state getting the funding for roads and other projects that they need, such as the pot wholes on road that I live on now.

    • May 17, 2010

Funding? Yet this country is broke?!

    • June 18, 2010

What does my race and wether I own a home or my education has to do with fixing a pot hole in the street you moron! The only information they need is how many people live in the house.

  59. May 4, 2010

Why do people think its cool not to answer some simple questions? You are not rebelling against the government by not filling out your census, you are just being childish! Grow up people! The government has all the information about you that they will ever need: name, age, sex, date of birth, social security number, bank account numbers, dental records, x-ray scans, etc… Name it, and they have it. If you are a wanted man, they will find you sooner or later. If you have nothing to fear, then act like an adult and just fill the census form! A patriot would fill out his census correctly! Don't follow David Horowitz's advice.

    • May 27, 2010

I agree.! It's our civic duty to vote, fill out the census and pay our taxes. We are Americans and our country is nothing without the citizens. This isn't a monarchy or dictatorship. By not exercising your right to vote, etc you are not only hurting yourself but everyone else around. Roughly 60 percent of registered Americans vote on a general election which means that there is about 40 percent of the country not heard. The reason politicians favor the elderly and are bi partisan on keeping social security and medicare is because the elderly (65 and up) are the biggest voting block. And the elderly use Social Security and medicare. Without it, the majority of them would be in poverty!

    • June 18, 2010

If they already have all our information, then why do we have to fill out the census. I think it is childish to just give up all your personal information. A mature adult questions why you want such personal data.

  60. May 5, 2010

Why is there a Census if the IRS has the same information?

    • May 23, 2010

Why is there a McDonald's when Burger King has the same thing?

  61. May 11, 2010

Obama is trying to take over the world and take any
Legal rights or freedom we have he just need an excuse
And they say its to help the community…what evr its n the bible
They pick ppl to go to war and etc but you don’t need any residential
    Approval to help the community

    • May 23, 2010

Damn Obama is REALLY old… He's been alive since the Census was created i 1790? LOL

    • May 27, 2010

Go get an education! People with your lack of knowledge are pathetic and hurting us as a species.

  62. May 12, 2010

    To Whom it May Concern,

Pursuant to Article I, Section 2, Clause 3 of the Constitution, the only information you are empowered to request is the total number of occupants at this address. My "name, sex, age, date of birth, race, ethnicity, telephone number, relationship and housing tenure" have absolutely nothing to do with apportioning direct taxes or determining the number of representatives in the House of Representatives. Therefore, neither Congress nor the Census Bureau have the constitutional authority to make that information request a component of the enumeration outlined in Article I, Section 2, Clause 3. In addition, I cannot be subject to a fine for basing my conduct on the Constitution because that document trumps laws passed by Congress.

    Interstate Commerce Commission v. Brimson, 154 U.S. 447, 479 (May 26, 1894)

    • May 27, 2010

Dan, knowing your race, age, sex, etc helps the Government know where to distribute the 400 Billion dollars in Federal money. For example, neighborhoods with predominately poor, Blacks, and low income housing will receive crucial financial aid than the wealthy residents of Hollywood. Also check out this link.http://2010.census.gov/2010census/why/constitutio... The Constitution is well within it's boundary to ask survey questions which can be gathered for statistics. The government has social security number, driver license, birth records and everything else about you so why does 10 questions bother you? This information is kept confidential and census workers are fine and sentenced to jail if they give out any personal information of anyone who took the census. The government is not trying to usurp your rights. People please stop hating on the government for doing its job.

  63. May 12, 2010

"Neither branch of the legislative department [House of Representatives or Senate], still less any merely administrative body [such as the Census Bureau], established by congress, possesses, or can be invested with, a general power of making inquiry into the private affairs of the citizen. Kilbourn v. Thompson, 103 U.S. 168, 190. We said in Boyd v. U.S., 116 U. S. 616, 630, 6 Sup. Ct. 524,―and it cannot be too often repeated,―that the principles that embody the essence of constitutional liberty and security forbid all invasions on the part of government and it's employees of the sanctity of a man's home and the privacies of his life.

  64. May 12, 2010

As said by Mr. Justice Field in Re Pacific Ry. Commission, 32 Fed. 241, 250, 'of all the rights of the citizen, few are of greater importance or more essential to his peace and happiness than the right of personal security, and that involves, not merely protection of his person from assault, but exemption of his private affairs, books, and papers from inspection and scrutiny of others. Without the enjoyment of this right, all others would lose half their value.'"

Note: This United States Supreme Court case has never been overturned.

  68. May 19, 2010

Just had a visit by a census person. Had a family member in the hospital with terminal cancer at the time we received the form in the mail and didn't send it in. At the time a dying family member had a higher priority. So when the census person showed up I don't think he was too happy that all I would give was the number of people in the house, birth dates, and for race all I would say was "American". I don't listen to Rush so I wasn't aware of his "Fill in American" comment till I read Joseph's response above. I have been using "American" for years now, especially during political polls in 2007 and 2008. I don't judge a person by the color of their skin, I judge them by their actions. If you are a citizen of the U.S. then you are an American and I will treat you with the respect you deserve, regardless of skin color or the country you came from.

  69. May 19, 2010

Okay, it's me again. Tried to include this with my comment above but it made the post too long and I had to split it up.

One issue about the Census that really bugs me is how it doesn't take in to account how military families are stationed in states that are not their home state. We are military and at a base outside our home state. I still have the driver's license from our home state and vote their too. So why should the f'd up state we are in right now and not even a resident of get credit for it while our home state gets hosed? If the Census is truly about making sure states get the amount of federal dollars they deserve then why don't they take in to account that military families should be credited to the states they are from and not to the states they are temporarily assigned to?

    • May 23, 2010

Duh, you are a resident of the state you are living in. THAT is the state you VOTE in…

  70. May 22, 2010

Last week, census worker came and we told them how many people in the house. This week, different census worker came and said we would be audited for not answering any more questions and that they would keep coming back.

    • May 23, 2010

LOL!! IF they actually said that they were lying. THey were just pissed you wouldn't cooperate on answering a few simple questions.

      • June 13, 2010

Actually, they have to keep coming back and give you the opportunity to act like an adult that is a member of an advanced society. Although you cost the rest of us a great deal of money by your continued efforts to fight the "govmint" all you are really doing is costing the rest of us a great deal of money through your ignorance. Eventually, your neighbors will tell someone your name and the other info. Although your a big freedom fighter in your own mind all your are is a drag on the working people of this country.

Grow up. it's going to happen. congratulations all you do is cost the rest of us money because you are ignorant.

  71. May 23, 2010

careful.. the black helicopters are coming to get you!

I really need to laugh when I hear people using arguments like how "childish" it is to decline to fill out a census form :D . Is that really the best reason you have for providing your personal information to a faceless bureaucracy that threatens you with legal action if you don't do exactly as they say? For my money, the only childish aspect of such a situation is said bureaucrats considering something as trivial as an individual standing up for their right to privacy as being worthy of spending public money on by taking such people to court. I wish more people would have the guts to stand up and *not* be counted in the face of such ridiculous petulance

Let's assume that the government really does need to know how many people of each type live in a particular area (say, zip code). It would be the work of about 1 day to set up a web site to gather that information in an anonymous fashion. An independent auditor could be used to verify that the data is merely totaled for each zip code (providing privacy). You get your census form, on which you state how many people live at your address. Then you visit the site, enter the specific code provided to access the site (so it can be noted that you have answered the questions), and answer the questions. The site then accesses its database for your zip code, adding your answers to its running totals (so that's two more purple people, who make $50K, own their home, etc.). Even the government admits that it doesn't REALLY need to know all that information about MY home, but that it needs it for regional demographic purposes.

While the government "promises" to not share this information, this IS the same government that couldn't keep the patrol areas of our ballistic missile submarines secret (look up the John Walker espionage case). But beyond that, perhaps it isn't so much that people don't want "the census" to have this information. Maybe its knowing that the temporary employee whose background is barely known to the government (and entirely unknown to the citizen) that is entering the data or asking the questions has access to the information is what people don't like.

Do you really want some random stranger to know your phone number, and that you make a lot of money, you're female, live alone, and own your house (which means no landlord checking up at unknown times)? I'm sure people like Ted Bundy would love to be census workers. Get a bunch of leads on potential victims.

I'm just giving people a heads up on consequences so that they can make an informed choice.

Like yourself, I can only hope that enough people disobey by compling with only what the constitution allows. Otherwise, it will be a costly and wasted opportunity.

True. I do not wish to do anything illegal…but only want to give them only the info that is afforded the government by the constitution. Not that they (the present administration) are interested in adhering to the constitution.

Just remember, once Obama signs Obamacare…it's illegal to not have health insurance.
