What’s in the water around here today?  Both John Guardiano and Mark Koenig have taken minority positions on this site, then asserted that anyone who disagrees with them is a bigot at worst, or ignorant at the least.

Mark Koenig’s post this morning ,Banning Same-Sex Marriage = Rationalizing Bigotr makes a lot of angry assertions, but sets no parameters for a debate.

KOENIG: Social conservatives seek to impose their religious view of morality – including but not limited to the proscription of gay marriage – on the rest of America in clear violation of our Constitutional principles.

“Seek to impose?”  That would be possibly true if it were social conservatives who were trying to undo 10,000 years of human tradition.

I even agree that the issue is overblown for fundraising purposes by some conservative Christian organizations, that no-fault divorce is a much bigger problem, that is beside the point here.  Civil marriage is what civilized society has fashioned in order to place responsibility for offspring and the orderly disposition of assets after death. Period.  In case there is no will, there are default settings that kick in (different in every state and country) to take care of such matters.

The state is not here to certify that your love is real.  There is nothing keeping you from making whatever legal agreement with whoever you want about your assets and living arrangements.

Koenig does not present one compelling argument as to why society should re-order itself to make him happy.  That would be the first order of business.  At least set some parameters for debate

1. Define marriage

2.  Define a purpose for marriage

3.  Define the compelling state or societal interest in changing the definition of marriage.

Then you can call for a debate.
