NewsBusters’ Brent Baker Defends His “Good Wife” Commentary

David Forsmark is the owner and president of Winning Strategies, a full service political consulting firm in Michigan. David has been a regular columnist for Frontpage Magazine since 2006. For 20 years before that, he wrote book, movie and concert reviews as a stringer for the Flint Journal, a midsize daily newspaper.

If you think Ryan Mauro and I had a civil discourse over our differences on whether Bush and Obama have any significant foreign policy differences, check out Brent Baker’s reply to my criticism that his selective commentary left an unfair impression with readers that CBS’s  “The Good Wife” stacks its dramatic deck to the Left.

BAKER:  This is the best critique of anything I’ve ever posted on NewsBusters, and while I don’t disagree with a word of David’s overview of the themes and plots in the CBS show, I would quibble with two assumptions he made.

First, I was not writing a “review” of The Good Wife or even of this one episode. I was just trying to do a quick post to highlight the latest instance in the media, including prime time TV, of how Palin gets hit with gratuitous shots. Trying to keep it short and on point and so didn’t go into a lengthy treatise on the show. (A week earlier I did a post on one line spoken by the Sally Field character on ABC’s Brother & Sisters: “I can’t believe the three of you are in here drinking while the GOP is out there denying global warming.”)

Second, the “no” from the Cole character does not necessarily mean a denial the picture of him with Palin was photo-shopped. He could have meant, no, you are right, that really isn’t me with her, I just put two pictures together. Also, this could simply be a production ability issue, but the photo sure didn’t look real since it was of Palin waving to a crowd and the Cole guy standing next to her, not the usual side-by-side smiling photo.

And it would make sense in the context of the show that after seeing the Baranski character’s picture with Hillary he would tweak her by creating a picture of himself with Palin.

My explanation is now longer than my original post! — Brent Baker

My reply:

FORSMARK:   Thanks, Brent. I hope I made clear that I’m a fan of you and MRC…

I’ll admit you analyzed the picture of Palin more than I did, and that you really weren’t writing a review. But I just thought it was peculiar to point this out as though the show were typical of MSM fare- whether you meant that or not.

But for a mainstream show to have the smartest and most incorruptible guy in the room even CLAIM to be a Sarah Palin fan, all the while illustrating how that would drive a liberal nuts, is something to celebrate. My wife and I laughed out loud at the sequence you highlight.

By the way, in tonight’s episode, “Fleas,” the law firm which is struggling financially, entertains the very dark notion of becoming the law firm of choice for a drug dealing cold-blooded killer who has built an empire of legit businesses.  Of course, Eric Holder and his former terrorist defending prosecutors would say, “What’s the big deal?”
