I remember sitting through classes on crowd control in the Army. We were told that if there was looting which could shoot the looters on sight and that there wouldn't be any questions asked. But our societies and culture has gone so wishy washy that it is terrible. We don't even put spys or terrorist to death on the spot. During the Rodney King riots here in So CAl if they had shoot some law breakers at the early start of the riot. It would have been over a lot quicker with less looting and burning. I remember during the Watts riots when the Cal National Guard shot and killed a couple of people who wouldn't stop at a check point. The riots went away very quietly. People like to live not be killed and there is nothing to die for by looting.

Those comments just illustrate how much of a decay moral relativism is. Once you put yourself in the position of no longer recognizing definite right and wrong, you start finding yourself justifying more and more morally questionable actions. For example, people who say they abhor murder, but refuse to speak out against honor killings because it is another culture and who are they to judge, they just justified murder thus weakening their own position against it.

These idiots are arguing to what degree and in what circumstances theft is immoral. They've allowed it as justified in one instance and now find that their arguments against it in other circumstances are weakened. Although I would argue that the emergency workers did not "steal" or "loot." They made use of available resources in order to carry out their critical job of saving lives in an emergnecy.

Look, _oron, Boortz is only saying that nothing compels you to sell your own items. If someone has had the lack of foresight to prepare for an emergency, fleecing them is a moral imperative.

He's said it repeatedly over the years, and I have long agreed. It's a case of 'good' intentions being harmful overall, and 'bad' intentions (the eeeevil profit motive) being more effective, beneficial, and helpful at getting people whatever they need the most, the quickest. Anything that stands in the way of that is what's immoral, not someone taking initiative and risk to give people another option they can take or refuse.

I live in Atlanta. A hurricane hit S. Carolina and a carpenter friend loaded up a a truck and trailer with his tools, camping gear, every generator he could get his hands on, gas, water, canned goods, and all the lumber he could fit on it, and headed to Charleston for the next 3 months. He made a good profit, some lifelong friends, and nine families had power within a day of the hurricane. He tried the same thing after a Florida hurricane and lost his *ss, because the artificially low prices he could charge there didn't cover the expenses. He was back in two weeks, and Floridians will just have no choice of whether to trade money for time and convenience after their hurricanes.

Didn't Prof. Glass say there might be a problem with stealing bags of groceries from a woman?
Also, could someone please provide the proper link to the photo in the article?

I disagree that disaster profiteers are bad or immoral. Letting the laws of supply and demand work moves resources to where they are needed most and returns normalcy far quicker than short circuiting them.

Stealing has to be moral for socialism to be moral.

I've known some rich that are rich because they scrimp on everything and that's why they are rich. I've also met some extremely rich people, (some call out of sight rich) that wouldn't give you a clue by their behavior that they were rich. On looting the MSM news during the hurricane in New Orleans says it all when a cop with cart is looting a Kmart.

Reminds me of the 1993 Reginald Denny beating trial in Los Angeles, where the foreman of the jury said there was no evidence that defendant Daymon Williams acted with intent to commit harmful injury. I could accept this if Williams had thrown a cupcake at Denny's head, but the missile of choice was a brick, remember?

The trial demonstrated that Reginald Denny wasn’t the only one whose brain was scrambled, but at least he had an excuse. What possibly could be said about the jurors? Were they born stupid, or did they follow their bliss to attain that status through grad school, persistence and hard work?

Looting is nothing more than what economists call hoarding. When the price of anything is too low, people accumulate more than they can use. So, people with lots of money have lots of things that they rarely use (I guess they use the stuff to feel self-important). In the case of looting everything is free, or it is perceived as free, therefore people simply take (steal) anything they can loose from its resting place. Why the professors are stupid is that they come to their conclusions through an ideological lens rather than a reasonable syllogism. These academics see the market based system as the pinnacle of injustice, therefore the looters are simply taking what is rightly theirs.

The reality is that looting is the lowest form of community breakdown and the height of injustice and oppression. Every person is for themselves and therefore they take what they 'may need at some future point.' So the moral argument flies out the window on two counts: first, stealing is the projection of power over the weakened party and second, hoarding in a time of crisis naturally oppresses the weak by removing resources from the community. If you want to argue with these academic types learn their language.

goron,
Could you please link that.? I'd like to see the whole quote if it exist, thank you. I've seen dozens of times where these things are purposely misquoted for political propaganda and I'd like evidence. If he said this relly meaning it then he needs to be condemned. If however you intentionally misled then you need to be.
Let's keep these comments real, OK/

Nobody tell Neal Boortz, one of the nation's best known libertarians, that "profiteers who try to capitalize on disaster by selling those necessities as hideously inflated prices are despicable in their own way." He's repeatedly said on the radio that jacking up prices on your own property (lumber, generators, and presumably food and water) in order to profit during disasters is cool.
