I’ve grown more and more cynical on “health care reform.” I’m watching the Bipartisan Health Care Summit right now. Barack Obama is speaking and talking about the intolerable horrors of our health care system. Apparently we’re not a utopia where everyone gets the care they need without having to pay for it.

Health care has been on my mind the past few days especially because I’ve just finished reading The Healing of America by journalist T.R. Reid. My progressive friend Pat Ray insisted I needed to read it so I could learn about how great other country’s systems were. So since I’m an open-minded person willing to understand other people’s arguments before I pronounce judgment on them I read the book.

Instead of seeing the Holy Grail of European-style Medicine I saw something else. In spite of Reid’s advocacy of foreign health care systems he is honest enough to show their drawbacks. Every system has serious problems that are different but entirely comparable in seriousness to the

(I’ll be writing more in depth about The Healing of America soon.)

One of the points I gleaned from the book — which I already knew — is this: No matter what government-oriented plan is on the table it always boils down to one thing. Government raises taxes on everyone and has rich and middle class people pay for the health care of the poor who do not have insurance. The price of health care cannot be “lowered” by government mandates. The burden of paying for care can only be shifted from one person to another.

No matter what system is in place there will be tremendous problems and people will go bankrupt. In our current systems individuals go bankrupt. In centralized systems everyone goes bankrupt. Medicare, Medicaid, and the health systems of other countries are failing. Governments are spending more than they’re taking in to pay for their systems.

Obamacare doesn’t work. It doesn’t work in other countries and it won’t work here.

*Update: Harry Reid just called Lamar Alexander a liar. He said that Alexander is entitled to his own opinion but not his own facts. That’s a coward’s way of calling someone a liar. Dirty Harry in action.
