New York Times Poll Tries to Prop Up Obama

The New York Times’ frontpage headline this morning is “Obama Fares Better in Poll Than G.O.P.”  According to the latest New York Times/CBS News poll, more Americans blame former President George W. Bush for the bad economy than they do the current president, Barack Obama.  More of those polled are upset with the Republican Party than they are with either the Democratic Party or Obama.

In short, while the New York Times/CBS News poll found that 62% of respondents said that the country was headed in the wrong direction and that Obama’s own approval rating was at its lowest point since he took office, Bush and the Republican Party in Congress were mostly to blame according to the poll.  Did I miss something or haven’t the Democrats run the Senate and House with super-majorities for over a year with Obama in charge at the other end of Pennsylvania Avenue?  At some point, they need to own up to the fact that they are in charge now.

I don’t know where The Times and CBS News actually took their poll, but the results  sound more like what the residents of the west side of Manhattan would say than the typical American voter.

Reality check – Nearly two-thirds of Scott Brown voters questioned in a poll right after he was elected to fill the “people’s” seat in Massachusetts (formerly belonging to Ted Kennedy) said that their vote expressed their opposition to the Democrats’ agenda in Washington. Three-quarters of those who voted for Brown said they were dissatisfied or angry with the policies of President Barack Obama’s administration.  And that was in the bluest of the blue states.

According to the latest data compiled by, the Republicans have a 3 point edge over Democrats in generic congressional voting.  More than half of Americans oppose the Democrats’ health plan, while only 38.1 % support it.

The New York Times will always look for a way to put a happy face on the Obama administration.  As Matthew Continetti of the Weekly Standard said about this latest effort:

File this one under “Beyond Parody.”
