Tauzin leaving PhRMA

Billy Tauzin, the head of the pharmaceutical industry’s powerful trade association, is stepping down, according to a source familiar with the decision.

As president of PhRMA, Tauzin struck an $80 billion deal with the White House last summer to help pay for health reform. The controversial deal has been a sore point with many congressional Democrats who wanted the drug industry to shoulder more of the cost of reform.

Tauzin did not immediately return a request for comment.

Update: PhRMA sent along a statement saying that Tauzin will serve until the end of June.

“In January 2005, after a full year successfully battling a killer cancer, I was given a second chance at life, and appropriately chose to commit my next five years to the life-saving work of the people whose miracle medicines had just saved my own,” said Tauzin. “For the past five years, I have given my all to that effort at PhRMA, and believe we have made a significant difference together,” Tauzin said in the statement.
