I would love to own the entire Sowell collection but as of now, I take advantage of the Public Library. It's a great resource.

Take it from me, the entire Sowell collection can be quite pricy. I have been working on it for a while...

[...] Recently, Boston College’s Alan Wolfe, a prime example of the above definition– wrote an intellectually dishonest pseudo-review of Intellectuals and Society for the usually rigorous New Republic—which David Horowitz dispatched quite nicely. [...]

I seriously doubt that Wolfe even read the book. Thomas Sowell is one of the clearest and most original writers of the past 40 years. He has covered topics that have never before been undertaken (Race and Culture Trilogy) and writes with such alarming clarity that he is exhilirating to read. Perhaps Wolfe's denunciation of the style in which Sowell writes has more to do with the effect it has on his own psyche.

And how preposterous is his claim that Sowell doesn't consider himself an intellectual. He never makes that claim in the book, only that Intellectuals tend to ascribe to the Vision of the Anointed, not that they all do.

Two Americas and cultures is absolutely right David! Conservatives and progressives, patriots and globalists, statists and individualists, god-fearing and god-hating, capitalists and marxists, and so forth. Oil and water don't mix, never did, never will. A leapord can't change its spots. We have always had opposites but now they are in opposite war camps, ready to engage in battle, neither side contemplating surrender. The American Left has awakened an army like the British did before our independence. Obama is the new tyrannical King and his socialist horde is the enemy to be defeated once for all so that America, at least, remains free of the stain and stench which now occupies Europe and other parts of the world.

Thomas Sowell is a true intellectual. I won't the moron's name in the same sentence with him. The guy only wishes he was half as thoughtful as Mr Sowell.

Thomas Sowell is one of our greatest thinkers. Although I have not read his latest book and only this criticism of Alan Wolfe's critique of it, I think on the surface, Wolfe may have hit on something that I can only hope Mr. Sowell will address in future books. Prof. Sowell's definition of intellectuals seems unnecessarily limited. Artists, musicians and writers of fiction also deal in their occupations with ideas. However, focus on the "art" often masks insidious ideas that seep into culture's conciousness without much fanfare. Even the trashy thrillers I call my mind candy for the break they give me from thinking too hard, contain leftist drivel on nearly every page: the corrupt politician who is always Republican; his opponent, always a Democrat, likened to a white knight, and so on ... It's gotten to the point where it's impossible to find entertainment that doesn't have me yelling silently at the page or screen and wondering if my children and grandchildren will be able to hear the lessons and values I'm trying to pass on to them over the din.

Alan Wolfe--a classic example of the "anointed ones" as well described in one of Thomas Sowell's great books, "The Vision of the Anointed" which should be read (or studied) with "The Conflict of Visions."Presently reading "Intellectuals" and enjoying it as well. We need "soldiers" like Thomas Sowell and David Horowitz in this intensifying conflict--keep up the great work!

I have for many years thought Mr. Sowell was one of the greatest thinkers of our time. It is heart warming to read this blog and the follow up comments. I'm apparently not alone.
