With D.C. snowed in today, the twittersphere is mildly inane.  When Washington waits many writers wait right along with it.  But you know who didn’t let a little snow stop ’em?  That would be The Reverend Al Sharpton who tweeted this afternoon:

We had a good hour and a half meeting with President Obama in the Oval Office about jobs. Just Mark Morial, Ben Jealous and I with the POTUS

Laudable that the Rev. Sharpton wouldn’t let the white stuff stop he and his pals, but the assemblage had me scratching my head.  Todd runs the NAACP, Morial the Nat’l Urban League and Sharpton is, well Sharpton.

Jealous told reporters later that the meeting focused on job aid for some regions to help black people and other groups hit disproportionately hard in terms of unemployment.

But isn’t the Prez on record as having rejected the idea that he should pay special attention to African Americans?  Well, yes.  Just 48 hours ago the NYTimes reported:

Mr. Obama framed it this way: “I can’t pass laws that say I’m just helping black folks. I’m the president of the United States. What I can do is make sure that I am passing laws that help all people, particularly those who are most vulnerable and most in need. That in turn is going to help lift up the African-American community.”

The issue of race and unemployment is a complicated one, and a reduction in unemployment will float ALL boats.  But wouldn’t it make sense to meet with a slightly more diverse group to formulate a plan…if you actually meant what you’d said earlier?
