Bill O’Reilly correctly observed last night that the Sunday morning news show hosts on the broadcast networks are letting down their viewers by not challenging the Obama mouthpieces enough in their interviews.

Case-in-point was David Gregory’s interview of Valerie Jarrett, Senior Advisor and Assistant to the President for Intergovernmental Affairs and Public Engagement, on “Meet The Press” this past Sunday.  He let her get away with lies and distortions that his predecessor Tim Russert would never have allowed to go unchallenged.

Jarrett referred to the “growing frustration” with Washington because of the dominance by “special interests.”  Instead of asking Jarrett whether these special interests included the drug industry and the unions with whom the Obama administration cut back-room deals, David Gregory moved on.

Jarrett complained about all of the “misinformation” and “distortion” that were interfering with the ability of the Obama administration to get its message on Obamacare heard.  She was not asked to name a single example, much less to deal with the substance of any of the arguments against Obamacare.

Jarrett boasted about what she characterized as the “dramatic difference” in how the United States is now perceived around the world, which she said had laid the foundation to keep America “safe.”  There was not a single follow-up question on the failure of Obama’s engagement policy with Iran that has brought Iran closer to making a nuclear bomb.  And what about a question on the Christmas Day underwear bomber orchestrated by al Qaeda or the Obama administration’s decision to put New York residents at risk by bringing al Qaeda terrorists to New York City for trial? Not a peep from the “Meet The Press” host.

Finally, David Gregory allowed Valerie Jarrett to spin a tale of economic achievements by the Obama administration.  Her assertion that the administration is getting our fiscal house in order, in the face of a tripling of the deficit during Obama’s watch, cried out for a follow-up question.  Instead, Gregory thanked Jarrett for showing up.

It’s time for David Gregory and his Sunday morning broadcast news colleagues to show up as journalists, not as feeders of softball questions to Obama’s mouthpieces.
