Vanunu – it’s time to get the facts

Michael van der Galien was born in the Dutch city of Leeuwarden in 1984. For as long as he can remember, he has been obsessed with the United States. When he was 17 years old, he started blogging - of course about America. His articles have been published at Big Hollywood, Pajamas Media, Hot Air (the GreenRoom) and Right Across The Atlantic. He's also an editor for the Dutch conservative blog, De Dagelijkse Standaard.

The late US Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan once stated that everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but not to their own facts. I was reminded of the senator’s words after reading Kevin Brooker’s call in the Calgary Herald to “Let Vanunu go free.” It’s not that Brooker isn’t entitled to call for Vanunu’s freedom (of course he is), but rather that he is basing his call on a string of false assertions and sophistry.

Mordechai Vanunu was convicted of treason in 1988 for disclosing state secrets about Israel’s nuclear research center, and subsequently served the full 18 years of his sentence. There have been several distorted versions of the conditions of his release circulating in the media. Here’s Brooker’s version…
