If Politico’s John F. Harris is correct and “Presidential politics is about storytelling†then the Obama campaign took an enormous risk using a narrative that left a lot to the individual imagination. Obama’s ambiguous call for change, created a fill-in-the-blank scenario for independents and moderates, and a call-to-arms for progressives.
“Presented with a vivid storyline, voters naturally tend to fit every new event or piece of information into a picture that is already neatly framed in their minds.â€
“The pro-Obama narrative featured an almost mystically talented young idealist who stood for change in a disciplined and thoughtful way.â€
However, the storylines that are emerging, Harris asserts, are a serious threat to the president if allowed to develop.
- He thinks he’s playing with Monopoly money
- Too much Leonard Nimoy
- That’s the Chicago Way
- He’s a pushover
- He sees America as another pleasant country on the U.N. roll call, somewhere between Albania and Zimbabwe
- President Pelosi
- He’s in love with the man in the mirror
Throw a dart and hit one. Like all good storylines each holds an element of truth, which if elaborated upon, and would take hold, these storylines could become Obama’s seven deadly sins. As with any vice, it only takes one to destroy a well crafted image.
As an Illinois native, my dart naturally gravitates toward “That’s the Chicago Way.â€
While Harris describes the Chicago Way as:
“The lesson that many Washington insiders have drawn is that Obama wants to buy off the people he can and bowl over those he can’t.â€
Illinois conservatives will tell you it is a ruthless, cold-hearted calculating way of not simply defeating, but destroying the opponent; an age-old tradition that goes back to the days of Al Capone, and is currently utilized by the New Left.
Dan Proft, Republican candidate for Illinois Governor told NewsReal:
“The Chicago Way is to create dependency by providing permanent incomes to folks they could not otherwise obtain in the private sector at the expense of the productive class. Those with permanent incomes will always vote to stay on the gravy train and the line of those who want on board grows building the political constituency of the Chicago Democrats.
They fix the political system by providing secure jobs and guaranteed pensions to patronage armies who in return provide the political muscle that sustains and advances the careers of their political benefactors, the Chicago Democrats. That’s the hustle.â€
Obama is the “Chicago Way†personified.
The blank check of “change†Obama promised independents and moderates bounced early on. Now the blank check the far left has expected the administration to cash, has bounced all the way to Afghanistan.
While conservatives need to understand the rules of the game this White House is playing, it may be Obama’s ambiguous call for change that forces the White House to live by its own play book.
Now that’s a story with a deadly twist.
