Write your senator a polite, but firm, letter/email urging a “NO” vote on “healthscare”. Issues: no tort reform provision; vague but elastic content, punitive (fines, prison penalties) bureaucratic inefficiency/huge cost overruns (re: the post office, medicare, Amtrak, social security).

He was patently exploiting the stagnation and reversals in Afghanistan to his political advantage. After being elected as Commander in Chief he tried to ignore his related responsibilities and the war itself until he could no longer do so. Making a decision about how to proceed with the war effort offered him no possibilities for ego gratification, as compared to (for example) the Nobel Peace Prize or winning the Olympics for Chicago. He may be discovering that the Presidency does not offer unlimited ego satisfaction and fringe benefits like those he experienced as community organizer and senator. The narcissistic “I” is beginning to realize that the Presidency is no picnic and that soul-searching and a grounding in moral principles and values is at the very core of being a Leader.

Those who watched Obama’s speech in horror keep saying this. But our own experiences with Al Quaeda tell us differently. Waiting us out would require quelling their own hatred for a time. This would be a smart thing for them to do from a strategic standpoint. But our experience in Iraq tells us they have no such patience. They will not wait us out. They smell blood, our blood, in our willingness to give in after a set time period, and are incensed. What they will perceive as a willingness to accept defeat, will encourage them to attack in more and greater evil ways, certain that public pressure will cause us to turn tail and run home all the faster. Mark my words, there will be attacks on children and women and on every place reasonable people would consider “safe” and innocent. They will attack our soldiers on bases, while they eat and sleep, and in the streets as they attempt to build communities and tend to the wounded and dead. The deaths will be ever more public and ever more horrible. This is the nature and purpose of terror as a war tactic. By this politically expedient half-measure , Mr. Obama has guaranteed more deaths of our sons and daughters as well as those of innocent Afghans.
