History Repeats Itself: Huckabee Becomes Dukakis

Devoted to his lovely wife 30 years, father of two who grew up exceeding his wildest expectations, B.A. Psychology, M. Ed. Counseling, former busboy, journeyman, Church's Chicken cook, purified ice and water salesman, Coca-Cola serviceman, certified public school educator, CCNA, CCNP, Senior Network Admin for a large school district in south Texas

Call it Willie Horton 2.0.   After winning the Democratic Party’s nomination in 1988, then-Massachusetts Gov. Michael Dukakis’s presidential campaign was destroyed by Republican attacks on his role in the release of Willie Horton on a weekend furlough. Horton surprised and shocked leftists everywhere when he did not return to jail, and later raped a woman and assaulted her fiance.

In the immortal words of Yogi Berra, this is like deja vu all over again as former Pastor and Governor Mike Huckabee commutes the 95-year sentence of Maurice Clemmons who is now a suspect in the cold-blooded assassination of four Washington state police officers.   Now all we need is a photo of doofus Huckabee riding around in a tank.

Huckabee’s political career may not be completely over, but his prospects for a successful presidential run in 2012 are about as likely as a Cap and Trade bill passing the Senate.  Not very likely, in other words.

Bad for Huck fans, perhaps, but terrific news for the Palinistas.  As the Republican pool of possible candidates continues to shrink, the prospects for a Palin presidential run seem more and more likely.
