But are they really distortions?

In another analysis-free, cut and paste post, today Media Matters slams a favorite Fox News target:

[Bill] O’Reilly claims health bill would “force all Americans… to fund, through their taxpayer dollars, abortions”

Because they don’t bother actually spelling it out themselves (as usual), I’m not sure what Media Matters‘ objection is. Is this supposed to be a Jesuitical “gotcha”, i.e., “all Americans” don’t pay taxes anyway, dummy, so there? That taxpayer funded abortions should be no big deal anyhow? That Bill O’Reilly is giant poopy head?

The New York Times looked at the wording of the Senate health care bill and reported the following:

Health plans could choose whether to cover abortion. In each state, there would have to be at least one plan that covers abortions and one that does not.

Low- and middle-income people who receive federal subsidies to buy insurance could enroll in health plans that cover abortion. But insurers would be required to segregate their federal subsidies into separate accounts and use only the premium money and co-payments contributed by consumers to cover the procedure.

The public plan could provide abortion coverage but would have to segregate federal dollars, just like the private plans.

“Segregated” “federal” (i.e., taxpayer) dollars. Right. Taxpayers will put stickers on every dollar bill to show which “fund” they want them to go into! Then elves will sort the money into treasure chests, and unicorns will fly everything over the rainbow to PlanLand!

Sounds an awful lot like Al Gore‘s imaginary “social security lock box.” (And would you buy a carbon credit from that guy after what happened this week?)

The way George Soros funds Media Matters makes way more sense:

Soros and his Open Society Institute pour millions of dollars into the coffers of MoveOn, the Center for American Progress, and Democracy Alliance. In turn, these organizations funnel some of that money to Media Matters.

No unicorns required!
