Media Matters: Marx's own words aren't Marxist (you crazy stupid rednecks!)

Glenn Beck: the next Lou Dobbs?

Once again, Media Matters accuses Glenn Beck of “smearing” a prominent leftist. (As we’ve noted here before, the left has redefined “smearing” to mean “having the nerve to publicize undisputable facts about our friends that make them and us look bad.”)

Last night on his FOX News show, Glenn Beck reminded viewers that Andy Stern — leader of the super-powerful Service Employees International Union (SEIU) and President Obama‘s favorite White House visitor — is fond of quoting Karl Marx’s famous phrase, “Workers of the world unite.”

Stern says it often. Always unapologetically. Glenn Beck finds that troubling. And why not? Marx’s words eventually led to the murder of tens of millions of people.

Yet Media Matters keeps mocking Beck’s segments on Stern, reminding us that Stern’s also been quoted as saying, “the good news is communism’s dead.”

However, the crack researchers at Media Matters have only come up with one instance of Stern supposedly celebrating the fall of the Soviet Union, whereas Beck has unearthed clip after clip of Stern giddily quoting Marx’s call to action, often with a self-satisfied smirk on his face.

But as far as Media Matters is concerned, Glenn Beck is the one with the problem. That’s because, as Roger Kimball noted yesterday:

If you’re Media Matters, CNN or The New York Times, you are in the happy position of proposing that what you espouse is elevating, middle-of-the-road, non-fractious opinion that is acceptable to “polite company,” i.e., you and your friends.

Kimball was reflecting upon Lou Dobb’s departure from CNN, for which Media Matters took considerable credit. It seems obvious that Glenn Beck is their next target.
